Despite making arguably the brighter start of the two sides at a rain-soaked Wincham Park, three goals in quick succession midway through the first half went a long way to consigning ten-man Leigh Genesis to a heavy defeat.

Having fallen to an injury time 2-1 defeat to Warrington Town in midweek, Leigh Genesis were keen to get back to winning ways after consecutive victories in their previous two outings, and that was something that looked a prospect in the early exchanges at Wincham Park, despite the eventual scoreline.
In fact, the opening twenty minutes suggested that, if anything, the points were more likely to head to Lancashire rather than be awarded to the hosts, with the thumping that eventually transpired seemingly the last thing that was likely to happen as Leigh took the game to their hosts.
The first chance of the game fell Leigh's way on thirteen minutes when Genesis were awarded a free kick thirty yards from goal when Andy Heald was bundled over. Paul Williams attempted a shot on goal with the free kick, but it was deflected in to the path of Paul Hopkins, who hit a low shot that looked set to deceive Matt Cooper in the Witton goal, only for the wrong-footed Cooper to react superbly and change direction to keep hold of Hopkins' strike.
Two minutes later and Hopkins was again denied by Cooper, this time after Cooper had done well to tip away a stinging drive from Andy Heald before deflecting Hopkins' rebound away to safety.
Leigh were playing the better football at this stage, but fell behind against the run of play on twenty one minutes when a speculative Dave MacPherson strike from distance skidded off the wet turf and caught out Genesis goalkeeper Adam Judge, with the bounce of the ball deceiving him as he managed to only help the ball on it's way in to the net.
Shell-shocked, Leigh fell further behind on twenty six minutes when a simple ball through allowed Ashley Stott to run clear on goal before rounding Judge and slotting the ball in to the empty net.
Only a minute later and Witton had scored their third goal in six minutes when a cross from the left hand side left Andy Kinsey with the simple of task of side-footing past Judge.
Genesis boss Mark Maddox made a double substitution on thirty three minutes with Gary Scott and Adam Strode being withdrawn for Simon Pendlebury and James Olsen, and as the first half drew to a close Leigh regained some of their composure and created a couple of half-chances with an emphasis more on their passing play.
Maddox has side on the field well before the start of the second half, but it didn't appear to have the desired effect with Witton scoring their fourth goal on forty seven minutes with something of a freak strike when a header came off the post that Judge did well to keep out, only for the attempted clearance that followed from a Leigh defender thumping against Lee Pugh and going in to the net past a helpless Judge.
If that was to sum up Leigh's bad luck, then more was to follow just two minutes later when Judge did well to keep out Matt Wood's drilled effort, only for it to fall straight at the feet of Danny Griggs for him to slot in Witton's fifth goal of the afternoon with more than forty minutes still to play.
Only a minute after conceding the fifth goal, Leigh went up to the other end and missed a golden opportunity for a consolation goal when Rick Gleave picked out Hopkins with a perfect cross from the left hand side, only for the Leigh winger to head over the bar when diving for the ball only a few yards from goal.
Leigh's task was made ever harder on fifty six minutes when Andy Heald was sent off for a second bookable offence, though Leigh finally managed to pull a goal back with just twelve minutes remaining when a corner broke to Hopkins, who finally managed to take his chance and curl in a delightful strike from the edge of the area for arguably the best goal of the game.
The next week brings a welcome break from Evo-Stik League Division One North fixtures for Leigh, with a President's Cup Preliminary Round tie at Skelmersdale United on Tuesday evening (21st September, 7.45pm kick off) being followed by a long trip to the North East to take on Northern League side Norton & Stockton Ancients in the FA Cup Second Qualifying Round (25th September, 3pm).
