Leigh Genesis might have lost their friendly encounter with league rivals Trafford by the odd goal in five, but Mark Maddox's Leigh side can take a huge amount of credit for a second half performance that threatened to turn a three goal deficit in to a winning margin.
With this pre-season fixture arranged at less than a week's notice because of both sides having suffered from a number of cancellations of other friendlies, Maddox was unable to call on several players because of work commitments, and the home side understandably started brightly, taking the lead with just eight minutes on the clock when the ball was slid in across the face of goalkeeper Adam Judge from the right hand side of the area and in to the far corner of the net.
That lead was doubled on sixteen minutes when Judge lost in a race to the ball with a Trafford striker, who looped the ball in to the roof of the net from the edge of the penalty area.
Leigh were playing some neat football but were looking vulnerable at the back and a rout looked to be on the card's when Trafford earned a three goal lead after just twenty minutes when Leigh were disappointed not to be given a free kick when inside the Trafford half, with the hosts promptly mounting a counter attack and slotting past Judge.
The game became a little more even as the half wore on, and Genesis even struck the left hand post of the Trafford goalkeeper with a curling shot from the edge of the area as the first half entered stoppage time, but the visitors faced a mammoth task in the second half.
With eleven minutes of the second half played, Genesis pulled a goal back with a corner from the right hand side headed in by the Leigh front man. Barely a minute later and Leigh came within a whisker of narrowing the margin even more when a header thumped against the crossbar.
A second goal did arrive for Genesis on sixty six minutes with an absolute peach of a free kick from thirty yards out that gave the goalkeeper no chance.
As had happened when scoring their first goal, the strike was followed almost immediately by another huge attack, with Leigh hitting the woodwork for a third time in the game with a looping shot that cracked against the crossbar.
Substitute Adam Strode came close to a previously unlikely equaliser when pinching the ball from a defender on the edge of the area before sending a shot inches over the bar, with Trafford again lucky to escape with just a couple of minutes remaining when the ball was chested down on the edge of the area for a shot that seemed destined to be heading for the net, only to scrape the Trafford crossbar.
The result is only Leigh's second defeat of the pre-season campaign with just one fixture remaining when they travel over the Pennines to take on Evo-Stik Premier League side Ossett Town on Saturday (14th August, 3pm) before Curzon Ashton are the first visitors to Crilly Park the following Saturday (21st August, 3pm) for start of the Evo-Stik Division One North season.
