Newton 1 Leigh Genesis 2

Mark Maddox's experimental Leigh Genesis side followed Saturday's 2-1 win at Silsden with their second pre-season win inside three days against tough Wirral outfit Newton.

On a bright Wirral evening, Leigh took the lead inside three minutes when a left-sided free kick was headed in by trialist Nick Eastham, his second goal in as many pre-season outings.

That lead was doubled after fifty one minutes when the ball fell kindly in the Newton penalty area for Paul Hopkins to sweep home.

The hosts deservedly pulled a goal back with six minutes remaining when Kevin Crook was left unmarked at the back post to lash the ball in to the net, but by this time Genesis were on their third goalkeeper of the evening after a succession of substitutions disrupted their cohesion.

The win means Leigh retain their unbeaten pre-season record after two wins and a draw ahead of a swift return to Wirral this Saturday with a tough trip to face Blue Square North side Vauxhall Motors (31st July, 3pm) before a trip over the border to face Welsh outfit Cefn Druids next Tuesday (3rd August, 6.45pm)

Hardly the most entertaining game I've ever seen, hence the short report! Would never find that ground again even if I tried one hundred times.

Looked good on the ball, but he'd get battered in our league - he only had so much time on the ball with it being a friendly.
