Is it just the club that has lost its way? A Chaotic Year

2011 A Sad and Chaotic Year for Arsenal Fans. I have been an Arsenal supporter for 50 years – yes, 50. Hard to believe, as my brain thinks I’m only 35….No disrespect intended to younger fans on this site, but in 50 years you definitely see the ups and downs a bit more clearly. This year the down has been one of the worst – partly due to raised, and then dashed, expectations.

The Wenger years

I have absolutely no doubt that the Wenger years have been the best in my lifetime as an Arsenal supporter (don’t turn off now, I will get to criticisms later!). The invincibles were…well…invincible ! I doubt it will ever be repeated. Bergkamp, Henry, Vieira, Adams – these players were worth the exhorbitant prices to see. My favourite moment of all was Adams scoring the 4th goal at Highbury against Everton to win the league, set up by Steve Bould! We were unlucky not to win the Champions League final against Barca.

I don’t go along with the view that winning is all that matters. I have so enjoyed many of our games in the last 15 years even when we have not won – the flair in the team has been fantastic at times. During the Wenger years, I have attended our matches much more regularly than in all the previous period – that says it all. But for the first time since Wenger arrived, I am in two minds about taking out another mortgage to attend a few home games this season.

The club has lost its way – but not just the club…….

I know I am not the first to say it but I feel the club has lost its way in the last three or four years. I will talk about the footballing side in a minute. But I feel the state of our club reflects how society has lost its way too. Now for the politics (have a snooze, if you must, but it’s relevant).

I’m a socialist and a Green. I believe in fundamental human decency, equality, respect for others and for the planet. Football is only a game (Shankly was wrong, even if it was a great joke!). But football has also become the epitome of everything that is wrong with the world and society – it has become inextricably linked into the grotesque capitalist economic system.

I commented a few weeks ago in a post on this site about football’s highest earners, that the wages were literally obscene. I use the word advisedly – obscene. My sister has recently retired after being a nurse for 40 years. Samir Nasri will earn in his first month at Manchester City as much as my sister did in 40 years of nursing. That cannot be right. Please don’t reply by burbling on about “market forces”. It is disgusting – full stop. There is no justification.

Inequality is growing here and everywhere. The wealthiest 1000 people in the UK have assets of almost £400 billion – more than double our national budget deficit. They could pay it off and still be super-billionaires. But they won’t. They want more – and they want you and me to pay for it. The bankers caused the world economic crisis and we have to pay. And when people riot – we are told there is “a moral crisis in society”. I agree – it is the immorality of the rich and powerful. See my recent blog on this issue:

What about football? Well in these same last few years since the economic crisis, the takeover of football by the super-duper-uber rich has accelerated. Abramovic and Chelski and now ManCity. As in the rest of life, the ultra-rich and powerful simply buy and get what they want. FIFA’s Fair Play rules will be brushed aside, despite Arsene’s naïve belief to the contrary. Our Board members and former members have made a fortune on their Arsenal shares and we are paying for it with the highest prices in the premiership.

You see football and politics/economics – it’s hard to separate them.

The mistakes of the last few years

I wish I could blame the filthy capitalists alone for the problems at the club. But I can’t. There have been real failures in player scouting and recruitment (or lack of it), in coaching, in leadership and in the management of the club.

Let me say straight away that we have had some bad luck too. Eduardo’s broken leg stopped us winning the premiership that season, I am certain. The fumble between Koscielny and Szczesny in the Carling Cup Final and the outrageous sending off of Van Persie against Barca scuppered us last season too. We might easily have won the Carling Cup at least and probably finished second in the premiership without these unfortunate twists of fate, that so cruelly undermined the team’s confidence.

But Wenger has to shoulder some blame too. It has been absolutely obvious to every supporter of the club (almost without exception) that our defence was not strong enough, that we needed to blend our exciting young players with some more experienced old hands, that we lacked real leadership and a genuine captain (not someone being given it as an inducement not to leave the club). These problems have been with us now for three years. Even with the influx of new blood in the last 24 hours, those deficiencies are still evident.

I admire Wenger’s refusal to pay ridiculous sums for 2nd rate players. But then why does he sanction paying so many 2nd rate fringe players in our squad equally unjustifiable salaries? And the transfer fee policy is not consistent. Apparently we could have bought Phil Jones from Blackburn for £10m last winter but baulked at the fee – only to offer half as much again this summer to be gazumped by ManU. And why did we pay a ridiculous £6m for Squillaci, for whom there were no takers this summer even when we tried to give him away.

As others have speculated, there is clear incompetence in our recent transfer dealings – for which Wenger probably only takes part of the blame. Others should fall on their sword.

The final insult was that the average age of Ferguson’s team for the 8-2 rout last weekend was lower than ours. He has managed to bring through younger players very successfully and integrated them into a team with more experienced players in a way that we have consistently failed to do. Our youth policy has unearthed some gems but also lots of overpaid underperformers who leave at the sniff of more money elsewhere.

END OF Part 1

In part 2 DJ will consider the situation after the recent transfer splurge and consider the balance sheet for the season ahead.

an interesting read.love the points you raised.I am of the opinion also that the super rich clubs are not the cause of our problem cos i loath to blame others for our demise..had we blended the old war horses with some young talents, we would have reaped dividends instead of mass clear out without like quality replacements only to find out that they are either not good enough or lack the heart & grit to push harder for a trophy...

you were right when you pointed out that our scouting & recruitment system, leadership & the management of the club are at fault.he won't spend big money to get the quality that will balance what we have but he can buy misfits, jokers & mediocre players & then go ahead to increase their wages over & over again..the market value of these players have been found out when he failed at every turn to offload them this season. who repays inconsistency & lack of improvement with increased wages??? what business model is that??? why do our scouts love french kids??? or old french players looking for big retirement wages???

as for eduardo's injury denying us the title, i don't agree... the melt down always comes around at a particular period & wenger fails to plan ahead for that contingency.

Can We Now Trust The Process 🤔🤷🏿‍♀️ or Should We Still Remain Cautious 🙇🏿‍♀️

Not much more I can add other than 100% agreed.

Wenger himself blamed the meltdown on Flamini and Hlebs antics

I agree that Wenger has to share some of the responsibilities for the current state of Arsenal. However, I attribute the current status on PHW and the Board. We are under the false impression that Wenger does not like to spend too much money on players. I think this philosophy was forced upon him, especially during the highburry years at Arsenal. Remember, Wenger did spend when the money was available. He spent almost £11m on Henry in 1999 which, adjusting for inflation, could be worth almost double that today and £15m on Reyes. The Emirates years compounded the situation because we had a lot of debt. Though we had a lot more revenue, we still couldn't compete with the bigger clubs for top players. David Dein realized this and that's why he was trying to align himself with first Kronke, and then Usmanov. For that, he was expelled from the Board. Ironically, the Board ended up selling out to Kronke after all.

Very good article and have to concur wholeheartedly about the obscene wages demanded/offered and paid to players (even in comparison to the poorly paid nurses and many other public sector workers).

Bit of a red herring about average ages in the ManU/Arsenal game though. Look at experience and you get a better comparison. We had less of it. Plus we had Arshavin.

The reasons for not winning the league that year were several. Eduardo's broken leg, Hleb and Flamini (the comparisons between Hleb and Nasri are almost identical - went missing when it really mattered), players not showing enough bottle, injuries and refereeing decisions.

I don't entirely get this thing about blaming the board for so much. Would there have been such an outcry against them if the players had won something last year? The Board don't put kit on do they?

Not lost the way, but for Arsene Wenger to see out his Youth Project till 2013/14 when his contract expires or sack before that.

The building of Arsene Wenger's 4th team started on September 1, 2011.

No they don't but I think in fact they have had far too much to do with who does and does not put the kit on since 2005 and not at all for the better. I think that the decisions they made specifially not to sell Highbury but to borrow another 120 million pounds when we were already on the hook for almost 400 million pounds, completely and untterly crippled our ability to compete at the same level under the same self-sustaining business model we had competed very successfully with from 1998-2005.

If anything what I don't get is why it took six years to finally get upset with the Board which cleaerly benefitted personally and financially from that decision and others which made them even wealthier than they already are. When I read Arseblog and see him say Stan Kroenke is asset stripping the club after four months when he's really done nothing any differently in terms of investment in the football team than the Board that made several hundred million pound selling to him in part by the same asset stripping and acts surprised by Mr. Kroenke's actions or lack of them I am frankly astonished. Especially when they have been doing the same thing for the last five years and he ignored that sort of claim any time it was made (and I know this very well).

The sad truth is we should have been expressing the concerns you seen surprised by now over five years ago. It's better late than never , but still that doesn't change the fact that I am shocked that it took this long.

We have been asset stripped and the club is cash rich. They would have been even richer if they hadnt got involved with all that real estate.

I don't disagree. My point is that its odd how so few people were willing to see this until Stan Kroenke bought the club for the Board. That may or may not be the case on here, but at Arseblog and elsewhere and even now there are many Gooners unable and unwilling to ask the same questions of the Club's Custodians and their conduct and motives as they are of Mr kroenke and Mr. Gazidis.

Edit - I may well have mis-read your post Padre, my apologies if as i suspect that is so.

Oh to the original query - I think we lost our way when we decided not to sell Highbury as had always been planned. We don't with absolute 100% certainty why this was not done, but i think its pretty clear by now that it was quite probably an intentional revuison inour business plan to pave the way to casing in at almost obscene profits given how little the multi-millionares running our club had invested in Arsenal FC or the Football Team itself.

I think we lost our way when the Board put personal profiteering ahead of Club custodianship.

Edit profiteering is well not more harsh in the sense that if this is so they betrayed this great football club and its wonderful suppoerters simply to makes themseklves even richer than they already were, but it still seems well, they aren't criminals or anything just really disappointing.

And now really disppointing seems too easy - if they did this and i am all but certain they did they disgraced themselves for all time in my eyes and spat on the Club they claimed to love like we do.

...Club they claimed to love...

I don't think most of them do, at any club. It's a status symbol for most, a glorified Gentlemans Club where they can dine their business aquaintances and earn kudos by being loved by the masses if they bring success to the team.

How many chairman, board members etc. of clubs would pay the ticket prices, the cost of transport, and travel 100's or 1000's of miles to see 'the team they love' if they woke up 1 day to find all their riches gone and had to live off the average wage.

That's why they are able to make the type of decisions regarding the club/team that are unpopular with fans - because deep down they don't have an emotional investment, whereas the fans do.

Agree fully Pip, the problem here is far too many Gooners allowed them to make this clearly false assertion and for far too long. Many Gooners still cover for them now even, even on some of the most popular forums and blogs, pretending that suddenly after four months everything has changed radically about how the Club is being run and why, and one blogger even stating the following

"...(Stan Kroenke)looks less and less like the custodian Danny Fiszman hoped he'd be and more like an asset stripper..."

The remarkable thing is that he could come to this conclusion after for months when nothing that happened this summer in fact is much different at all from the previous five summers when Dan Fiszman ran the Club. Astonidshing and astoundingly disningenuous and downright dishonest really.

And sadly all too typical of all too many Gooners to this day wedded to their blind loyalty to the Arsenal Way and thusly their blind loyalty to the Arsenal Board as the living embodiment of that Way like footballing Dalai Lamas ( no offense to the Buddhists on here) almost. And thus all too easily conned by the likes of Mr. Fiszman and the rest of that Board.
