Joey Barton was named Man of the Match by Tyne-Talk's resident player rater, Wasim4nufc for his performance against Wigan Athletic on Sunday afternoon. The whole team picked up the pace to collect three points and move six points clear of the bottom three. Read on to see how the team faired...
Player Ratings
Steve Harper (7) - Did not have a lot to do but did well when called upon.
Danny Simpson (7) - Provided a superb cross from which Shola should have scored. Despite an early booking he defended well and linked up nicely with Barton.
Steven Taylor (7) - Was unlucky not to score with a header which hit the crossbar but will be happy with the clean sheet for our defence defended well with him winning many balls in the air.
Fabricio Coloccini (8) - Really steady and calm at the back. Can hardly remember him making a mistake today and he too was unlucky not to score after his header hit the post in the first half.
Jose Enrique (7) - Made one or two mistakes early on, losing the ball or miss controlling it but recovered well thereafter even though he's had better games before.
Joey Barton (8) - It was his hard work which lead to the goal. He pressurised the defender and eventually got a good shot in which the keeper could only see end up in the back of the net moments later. Controlled things for us and most of our best moves had him involved somewhere in the build up. Provided some good set pieces too.
Cheik Tiote (8) - Superb in the centre of the park. Won many tackles, lost the ball very few times and helped us win the midfield battle which lead to us winning the game. On top of all that, he never got booked today which doesn't happen very often!
Kevin Nolan (7) - Not as influential as the previous two but still played his part in today's win. Proved to be a good link man between the midfielders and strikers.
Jonas Gutierrez (7.5) - He lost the ball twice in the first three minutes and I thought to myself how does he start every game but he picked up his game and did well especially when he ran at the Wigan defence. Had a pretty decent game and showed he does add value to this team when he plays well.
Peter Lovenkrands (7) - Should probably have scored at least one goal today but despite that he ran into space well and played his part in the goal. Put in a good shift overall.
Shola Ameobi (7.5) - We saw the good and the not so good from him today. Scored the only goal of the game but missed the easiest chance of the game as well. Won plenty in the air though and did well in the absence of Andy Carroll.

Wayne Routledge (7.5) - Despite the lack of a good final ball he did very well when coming on. Beat his man at least three times and showed that he can be a danger when coming on through his skill and pace.
Leon Best (6) - Looked pretty average when he came on although he did go on one good run despite failing to hit the target with his shot.
Alan Smith (N/A) - Came on with a few minutes to play.

Routledge had three chances to send the ball in, completely unmarked, and produced three terrible crosses. I can't find anything good in that. I found myself wanting him to cut inside. Maybe he can finish. He can't cross.
Jose showed the effects of the injury and Loven looked rusty so they get mulligans for me.
Ameobia was solid-he won the first ball that led to the goal, too.

Just fyi: Tiote attempted more passes (56) than anyone in the side (Watson for Wigan attempted 61) and completed the highest percentage of passes of anyone on the pitch (51 = 91%).

we got away with that, but it could have been a draw against the worst side we have played this season. its only three days later, and taylor has been out a long time, lets rest him for williamson tomorrow, please.

Agreed LMK. Williamson has done nothing wrong apart from getting suspended. The timing for this and Taylor's contract has probably been the worst piece of luck for Williamson as anything. He was suspended under CH then Pardew was brought in just before his last game he needed to sit out. If he had been playing I dont see him being dropped for Taylor.
He still looks overweight and the 'Ive just been shot in the chest' routine is laughable. You could make a gag reel on his antics.
Thought Colo looked very tidy. Barton and Tiote were immense. Thought Loven got into some decent positions but yes a little rusty.
Shola had a very good first half and filled in well. On that score Im wondering if it would be better to keep Shola as fresh as possible as back up if AC gets injured such as he is at the moment. The amount of niggling injuries that Shola picks up possibly means better management of them like Craig Bellamy does at the moment. I mean instead of playing them both together like has been done too good effect at times this season. I do appreciate that options have been thin at times up front though.
Was a little disappointed to see Tiote rolling on the ground after that little spat on the sidelines. He really doesnt need to do that.

routledge done a good job if it was still shola on ( all due respect wasnt match fit played well up to a point) then he would have lost it very quickly he had the ball in their half and at 1-0 thats what we have always failed to do against the minnows of this league.

he doesnt seem to be a huge ranger man. unless playing best was just to remind other clubs about him during the window, but pardew did suggest he'd play him again soon in the after match bit
I have no doubt that Best is being played to put him in the shop window. No doubt at all.
As for Ranger-rumor is that he would have started at Birmingham if that game hadn't been cancelled. Even if that isn't the case, the guy came on and really changed the game against Liverpool in AP's first match. I can understand Ranger thinking that if that doesn't get him a start, nothing will this season (except maybe if he had finished his chance!)...

either tonight or saturday, ranger should have a long run out. i rememder the birmingham situation, yes, it looked like he was about to get a start. hope he doesnt wait much longer for a chance
I'd just like to know if:
-he's ready for PL football on a regular basis and can help us in the run-in...
or
-he's still too raw and we should loan him to a ccc side and get in help at that position.

yup, you're right. we've seen the odd glipmse, especially distracting liverpool as they chased teh game at our place. he's benched again though.
