Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Derby County

By Tyne-Talk
December 27 2009

Newcastle United host Derby County tomorrow evening in their last game of 2009. The hosts, currently 10 points clear at the top of the table take on 18th place Derby with 25 points separating the two teams. Chris Hughton's players have 4 wins and 2, 2-2 draws from their last 6 games whilst Nigel Clough's side have lost their last 2, drawn 2 and won 2 from their last 6.

Alan Smith is expected to return to the starting eleven after being sidelined for yesterday's draw with Sheffield Wednesday with an ankle injury. Chris Hughton has no other injury worries other then the long term absence of Joey Barton (foot).

Shola Ameobi is expected to start after scoring four goals in his last four games, whilst Andy Carroll is chasing for a start after replacing Shola for 20minutes during yesterday's match.

Derby County are without Dean Moxey as he serves a 1 match suspension for being sent off after receiving 2 yellow cards on Boxing Day, but Clough will be hoping either, Shaun Barker (thigh), Miles Addison (foot) or Dean Leacock (knee) will be fit to play.

Jake Livermore will play his last game for Derby before ending his loan spell and returning to Tottenham Hotspur, whilst midfielder Paul Green could return having recovered from the flu.

Fact: Newcastle United have lost the last game of their last 6 calendar years, their last win on their last game of the year came in 2002 when they beat Tottenham Hotspur.

Fact: Newcastle United haven't lost at home against Derby County in 9 league games, having won 5 and drawn 4. Their last clash at St James' Park ended in a 2-2 draw on 23rd December 2007.

Great! another game I can watch.
Derby have only won one away match so I'm going for a win for us.
Hopefully Ranger will get a run out.

Ok, I'm back and the Toon have my attention 100% now. Too bad we choked our early chances--a team like this would have been crushed by and early goal and the onslaught would have begun....the longer before we score, the more confidence they'll gain.

I like Lovenkrands up front. Gives us speed. I wonder if he's sharp though given his family issues.

Boxing Day and today are why I'm worried sick about promotion. Not whether we get promoted, but what do we do once we are. Without upgrads and depth across the XI we are in for more relegation battles and bottom half living. I hope MA spends once we are promoted.

Starting 2nd half well though from the looks of it.

We sorely lacked that killer pass from midfield. Why wasnt Guthrie playing today? He has better deliveries than Ryan Taylor.

We'd better start turning this around or we will start losing some of these type of games. We must keep with the momentum.

chin up colarado! over 6 games we have 4 wins and two draws. none of the top half can beat that, not forest (same record), not cardiff, or west brom.

our very recent rise to such a postition was down to us winning when our rivals wobbled. we havent lost in how many games now? hard for any team to catch that kind of form, so long as we keep throwing a few wins in too

Not all is lost, and I could give a @#$%& less about finishing 1st or 2nd, but only 8 points up on the playoff spots is reason for worry. Not panic, but the results need to be better.

The last two matches highlight two things:

1. We do not have any individual threats of note. Even Nolan has relied on good service. We have no one who can pick up the ball in the opposition half and make a goal himself.

2. Our manager does not have a very deep bag of tricks, tactically speaking. More and more clubs are going to look to park the bus in front of goal. CH & Co. need to find ways to open them up.

lest try raylor at right back again, with guthrie ahead. these two make more chances for others than anyone else. i also liked lovenkrands, so maybe he should start with shola now that harewood has gone?

I think Danny Guthrie is the only player this season who has made a run with the ball that ended with a cracking shot. But with him on the flank, he doesn't get the chance to cut down the middle enough. He looks uncomfortable on the wing despite putting in some stellar crosses his last couple games. I wish we could push him to the middle again.

Honestly, Nolan isn't getting forward these last few matches. He has 3 goals in November and December (played in 8.5 matches). By contrast, he scored 7 in the previous 14 games.

Raylor and Guthrie are the only two players with the ability to cross the ball and the only two players with the ability to strike a dead ball.

I don't like Raylor at Right Back as he tends to get caught out of position way more often than he should. However, I thought his set pieces today were quite effective and I always feel we're missing that threat from corners and free kicks when he's not on the pitch.

Getting Raylor and Guthrie onto the pitch at the same time with a 4-4-2 is difficult. It forces Raylor to play at Right back, which is the problem. In a reversion to the 4-4-1-1 it's doable as Raylor can play the Right Flank, Guthrie in the middle, and Nolan as CF, but Ameobi and Carroll have had decent form recently, Lovenkrands is our only real pace on t and we had trouble scoring in that formation during October.

Agree with you waffles and just posted something similar about Nolan and the midfield. Its hard for me to say the things as we have been doing so well and better than I could ever have thought, but..... this has been coming for a good few games now and like LMK said the other day we havnt been steam rolling teams week in week out.

With our defence we can afford to be more attacking, espec when we have either Smith or Butt sitting.

Sitting back has never been our style.

so lets play ryan at right back, we can cope so long as the other three defenders are fit and well. what we lose as a defender we more than gain as a force going forward and at set peices

The choice between Raylor and Simpson can be made on a game-by-game basis. There are sides in this division whose LW don't pose enough of a threat to preclude Raylor playing in the back four. I wouldn't mind him starting on the wing, either, with Guthrie in the middle with Smith, Jonas on the left, Shola up top and Nolan right off of him: 4-4-1-1.

My god...it's almost like there's a selection crisis...not based on injuries...right here at NUFC!!!

We have depth in the midfield. Newcastle United has depth in the midfield. Think about that statement for a moment. Do it. Your head will begin to hurt after 20 seconds or so.

Last season we couldn't decide who to put in the midfield because every option sucked.

Yes, half our midfielders won't cut it in the PL, but for the time being, we have 6-8 viable healthy options at the moment: Jonas, Smith, Nolan, Guthrie, Raylor, Pancrate, Lovenkrands (though he's been playing up top all year), Butt. Barton comes back in a couple weeks.

Hell, we can't even decide who to start up front. Carroll, Ranger, Lovenkrands, and Ameobi.

Ameobi is scoring goals. Foluwashola Ameobi is scoring goals! Think about that one for a moment. It'll hurt your head after 10 seconds.

By a distance we have the best team in the league, midfield we have loads of options and unless we get a creative midfielder then R.Taylor needs to plays in midfield, as he becomes unstuck in defence. If we get stuck then stick him back but I would look at the kids first
