Hughton Disappointed With Owls Equaliser

Newcastle United may have got a point at Hillsborough today in their 2-2 draw but manager Chris Hughton is not happy with Sheffield Wednesday’s equalising goal in the 59th minute. To viewers it was clear that Sheffield’s Luke Varney fouled goalkeeper Steve Harper, but referee Stuart Atwel gave the goal. Harper was furious by the decision & Hughton has now commented on the decision for it to stand.

He told the official club site nufc.co.uk;

“On first viewing I thought that it must have been a foul because I wouldn’t expect Steve Harper to lose the ball in that situation. And, having now seen the replay, the player certainly impedes Steve.

Steve knew himself right away and you can always tell by a player’s reaction if he’s been fouled.You expect a referee to five a free kick in those situations. We’re disappointed because that’s a big turning point and in the end it has won them a point.”

Despite dropping two points in the Boxing Day clash, Newcastle are now 10 points clear of the play off places and 8 points clear of 2nd place West Bromwich Albion.
