Gillingham defender Josh Gowling scored on his first return to Sincil Bank to join a rare club of ex-Imps who have scored against the Imps after leaving them. Lee Thorpe holds the record this century with 4 goals, but other than that there's not a lot of examples of this, disproving the believe that old players "always" score against you.

Gowling scored the first of Gillingham's four at Sincil Bank as he headed home in the first half. In doing so he did what several former strikers have failed to do and score against the Imps after leaving them.

This century several strikers have played for the Imps before returning to face City and failing to hit the net. Derek Asamoah, Tony Battersby, Anthony Elding, Jamie Forrester, Martin Gritton, Adrian Littlejohn, Richard Logan, Spencer Weir-Daley and Ben Wright all returned to face City, a team who they had played up front for, and failed to score.

Lee Thorpe (right) was leading goalscorer for the Imps for five season in a row before leaving for Leyton Orient in 2002 but never really scored consistently anywhere else, however, since then he has faced City on 14 occasions and hit the net four times, putting him at the top of the goalscoring table of ex-Imps. The Imps and Thorpe could meet again next season if the Imps stay up as he is currently at Fleetwood, whom are in the Playoff positions in the Blue Square Premier.

Lawrie Dudfield is second with three in 12 appearances. Only Ciaran Toner and Peter Gain have also scored more than once against the Imps in this situation, both hitting the net twice.

Junior Agogo, Hamza Bencherif, Louis Dodds, Kevin Ellison, John Finnigan, Francis Green, Greg Pearson, Marcus Richardson, Kevin Sandwith, Danny Webb, Craig Westcarr and Simon Yeo have all hit the net once against City.

Gowling did also join the even rarer club of those that have scored in every meeting against City after playing for them, the only other player being Delroy Facey, who scored for Notts County before rejoining Lincoln in the summer.
