Lincoln City's new signing Scott Spencer has revealed how pleased he is to join the Imps but he had no problem in getting his views about his former employers out of the way. In an interview with the Southend Echo, Spencer slatted Paul Sturrock, going as far to call him an idiot.

“I know he has been in football for 30 or 40 years and that I have been in it for only a few weeks so my opinions may not mean as much, but I think he’s an idiot,” Spencer told the Southend Echo. “I don’t think he should be involved in football any more and it was just shocking I wasn’t even making squads."

Spencer joined the Imps on Monday following his release from Southend late last week after finding his first team opportunities at Roots Hall virtually non-existent. He did make his Imps debut in Tuesday's win at Bradford, playing the final few minutes.

The Imps are no strangers themselves to a former player heavily criticising them after he has left. One such infamous incident followed Leon Mettam's release at the end of the 2006/7 season. Mettam had come through the youth system but was released after failing to make an impact. In the days that followed he joined Stamford and subsequently stated "Stamford's training facilities are far better than Lincoln's. Lincoln will be sorry they've released me." Since then he has failed to play above Blue Square North/South level.......oh yes, we're sorry alright.

Spencer continued "The strange thing is that I thought I actually did OK in the game against Stockport and then when I came on against Bristol City in the Carling Cup but I never started another match. It really angered me and got to me as well because it was so frustrating training all week knowing that I never had any chance of even making the squad.”

He was however quick to praise Tilson "’m excited about the opportunity and being involved with first team football again,” said Spencer.  I watched Lincoln’s game with Port Vale at the weekend and they played some really good football, just like Steve Tilson’s sides always do. That’s the style I like and hopefully it can go well for me after what has been a very frustrating end to my time at Southend.”

It will certainly be interesting in March to see how Spencer and Sturrock react to the sight of each other when Southend visit Sincil Bank.

I do not know the exact quote, but it would be better if he did his talking on the field and prove to the Southend boss that he should have kept him.

I do not like these verbal attacks that are prevelent in football.

What purpose does any of this serve? It never happened in older days.

Scott Spencer is a reserve player. In league football he has a minimilist record. He is not Michael Owen or Fernando Torres. He should concentrate on improving his football here. He may well be given the boot in May from here(Although i doubt it).

I'm glad the lad has joined us, and wish him well. He looks a good prospect.BUT he needs to learn some respect,too. Whatever else he is, Paul Sturrock is no idiot. Back to back promotions with Plymouth Argyle, promotion with Sheffield Wednesday via the playoffs, too.And Southampton regret the day that they let player power push him out at Southampton.
Now he is battling Parkinsons and still managing a good job at Southend.
Spencer might not be "his player" but all managers have favourites.He needs to prove Sturrock wrong on the field not in the columns of the local paper.

Sturrock's response was more restrained, but it is difficult not to read between the lines to extract the real message,

"I wish Scott all the best in his footballing career. I hope he reaches the heights he feels he should achieve."
