Lincoln City's reign at the bottom of the table seems a distant memory as City record a third win a row to move to the dizzy heights of 19th. It took a late goal from Ashley Grimes to secure the points that moves the Imps clear of the drop zone, also helped by results going their way.

Vale, the pre-season favourites for the title, kicked off the game and won a very quick free kick. Taylor swung the ball in but it was cleared by Howell and McCallum. Having scored from long distance against Stockport, Grimes was certainly not afraid to try his luck and when a poor clearance from Martin fell to him, he tried his luck from nearly 35 yards, but it was easily claimed by Martin in the goal. McCallum shot wide of the target. 

The referee would prove to be a frustrating figure, blowing for free kicks on a regular basis and causing attacks to be relatively few and far between. O'Keefe's 20th minute header from a McCallum free kick was easily claimed by Martin. Facey tried his luck with a 30 yard volley that just went over the top of the bar before a rare Port Vale attack saw Carson eventually claim a Port Vale corner. The contstant awarding of free kicks kept chances towards the end of the half to a minimum and the sides went in level.

The second half was much like the first, full of free kicks and a McCombe header was the only opportunity of the early second half. Howell was booked for a foul on Griffiths before Hunt headed a free kick straight at Martin in the Vale net.

Pope replaced Geohaghan in the 69th minute (that's how stop start the game was)_ before Jarrett came on for McCallum on the left for the Imps. Griffiths was booked for a foul on O'Keefe before the Imps man hit the post from the edge of the 18 yard area.

The game was heading towards a dull goalless draw before the one inciscive attack of the game produced the winner. The ball broke for O'Keefe and Howell, who worked together for the latter to play a through ball for Grimes, he shot across Martin and into the net with less than three minutes left.

Then, in the 93rd minute, Port Vale produced their first shot on target of the game, a low volley from Pope that was easily saved by Carson, although the flag was held up. The game ended soon afterwards and the Imps were up to 19th.
