Lincoln City's former defender Ian Baraclough has been appointed as the new manager at Scunthorpe United. Baraclough has been in charge since the departure of Nigel Adkins to Southampton earlier in the month. He is the latest in a line of former Imps to go into management.

Ian Baraclough has been in charge at Scunthorpe for the last few weeks and on the back of some strong performances, including forcing 29 shots against Manchester United on Wednesday, he has been given the job on a permanent basis. He follows in the footsteps of two of the club's most successful managers, Brian Laws and Nigel Adkins.

Brian Laws gained promotion twice whilst at Scunthorpe and even managed to get sacked in 2004, only to then be reappointed three weeks later. He eventually left for Sheffield Wednesday and was replaced by physio Nigel Adkins, who not only guided Scunthorpe to promotion twice in three seasons, but he achieved the unthinkable last season, keeping Scunthorpe in the Championship. They had made a decent start to this season before Adkins left for Southampton.

Baraclough is the latest in a long line of former Imps to become managers. Graham Taylor is arguably the most well known out of all of them, although Steve Thompson, Keith Alexander and John Schofield, amongst others, have mangaed the Imps after playing for them. Steve McClaren manages in Germany, Simon Weaver is currently manager at Harrogate Town, Chris Wilder is at Oxford United, whilst other former Imps such as Ritchie Hanlon, Stuart Bimson, Gary Brabin, Gareth Ainsworth, Mark Stallard and Adie Moses have also sat in the manager's chair at various clubs during their career, amongst others.

Elsewhere in football, former Imp and Scunthorpe striker Steve Torpey has been placed in temporary charge at York, taking over from Martin Foyle who has resigned.

Always liked Baraclough and have mixed feelings about this one because I suppose I hope he does well but have always seen Scunthorpe as our main rivals and the team I most want to beat. It hurts me to see such a miserable town be two divisions higher than us and doing a good job at holding their own and getting some brilliant cup-ties.

It should be added for younger fans that Baraclough was one of many decent players given away for free in the early 90's. I believe he was let go by chairman John Reames in 93/94 who decided after sacking Keith Alexander after only one season that he knew best on the retained list. Baraclough went on to do very well for Mansfield and then had a good career with Notts County, QPR and Scunthorpe in higher divisions.
