Janos Kovacs was a first team regular under Peter Jackson but no player felt the Sutton-effect more than he. The defender found himself dropped quickly after the appointment of the former England striker and it wasn't much of a surprise when his contract was mutually terminated. He could return to Sincil Bank next season with Luton.

I'll be honest in saying that I never thought that Kovacs was good enough to be a regular first teamer. He was a fringe player at Chesterfield for a reason and although he was a brilliant bloke and one of the nicest footballers you're ever likely to meet, but I don't think he was actually that good at football.

In the air he was as good as the likes of McCombe, McAuley and Futcher, but on the ground he was about the same level as Jude Stirling. He was just terrible with the ball at his feet and he would often make more mistakes than make a decent impact on games for us.

Don't get me wrong, I have definitely seen worse footballers, but whether he's good enough for regular first team football in the League is very much up to debate. Against big and slow opponent he would be fine, but against some of the quicker attackers he would stand no chance whatsoever.

Kovacs played every single minute before Sutton was appointed, but his opportunities were limited after Sutton came to the club and Kovacs' last appearance came in the FA Cup game at Northwich. He had his contract terminated in January and signed for Luton.

Top bloke, but I think being dropped after the cup game against Northwich finished it for him. Jackson also handed him an inflated wage which meant he was always likely to go considering that Sutton needed to bring his own players in. It didn't escape my attention that our remaining centre-backs started dropping like flies after he left though. In fact, I don't think we had a settled pairing from January onwards.

Nathan your point about kovacs wouldn't stand a chance against quicker attackers. i'd say most defenders,big or not would not stand a chance against most quick attackers.

I do feel we should of got some fee/add on from luton. he could help luton back into the league.

I think we got our moneys worth with Kovacs, not the best player but always gave the fans a lift.
