Chester's expunged results gift promotion to Oxford

With the Imps now looking likely to stay in League Two, we take another look at the Blue Square Premier and those teams coming up, and with Chester City being expelled on Friday and their results being expunged and Oxford United will benefit, extending their lead over Stevenage and giving them a massive advantage in the promotion race.

Chester City's relegation last season effectively proved to be the end of their football club. Not only were they deducted twenty-five points, that even with those points added on, they'd still be comfortably inside the relegation zone with only Grays below them. However, with them being chucked out of the league, the expungment of their results (which was confirmed on Saturday) has brought mixed effects throughout the division.

Oxford United will probably be the happiest out of everyone. With a massive lead having been nearly wiped out by Stevenage, they re-established a three point advantage, an advantage that will now increase to six with the points adjustments. Add onto that the fact that Oxford still have a game in hand, a return to the Football League now looks inevitable.

Stevenage were the only one of the top three to have played Chester twice, getting two results, meaning that

Janos Kovacs' Luton Town will also be delighted with the expungment after they failed to beat Chester in either meeting this season. Although they're already in the Playoff places, being the only team chasing promotion not to beat Chester, they will be the main beneficaries behind Oxford.

Oxford and stevenage have both played 30 games, both have game in hand over York who sit 3rd.

Stevenage could still win it but i don't think oxford will throw 6points lead away.

Mansfield have not had their chances of the play offs done any favours. They will lose 6 points.

Sad, sad day for Chester but it has been coming for a while. club has been run by Incompetents (and worse, but libel prevents me saying more) for years, especially the current regime. The things that have been happening there the last couple of seasons in particular, beggars belief.

A fans trust is trying to set something up and hopefully a new club will emerge, like Aldershot a few years ago.

Our board may be far from perfect, but they do at least appear capable of running a whelk stall and operating within company and tax laws.
