Our first League game of the decade sees us travel to Barnet's Underhill Stadium. With the Imps in need of high spirits after just one win since October 10th, we look back on what was not only our last victory at Barnet, but also arguably the best away performance of the entire of the last decade, a thumping 5-0 win at Underhill
The Imps went into the game on the back of a 2-0 win at home to Hartlepool United, whereas Barnet were struggling at the bottom of the division.
Despite kicking off the game, City were on the back foot for most of the opening exchanges, Barnet weren't creating many opportunities themselves and City made them pay with just over 15 minutes to go as City launched what was at the time a trademark counter attack. Kerr broke and played it to Frecklington, he drew Flitney out and proded it to Forrester and he tapped in to give City what was arguably an undeserved lead.
It could have easily 1-1 a minute later as Marriott was forced into a brilliant save from Hatch. Forrester put City two up from the spot after he was bought down by Flitney. The hapless keeper and his defence were having no more luck and were quickly 3-0 down when a clearance was blasted against Beevers and the ball sailed into the net, not that Beevers knew anything about it.
It was 4-0 soon after the half time break when Frecklington went down a bit theatrically to gain another penalty, Forrester tucking it away to complete what would turn out to be a second of three hatricks that season. Leon Mettam completed the rout just before full time.
Despite this memorable victory, City have lost both meetings at Underhill since.
we've got quite a good record against barnet since they came back in the league winning 1-0 this sesoson 5-0 and 4-1 a few of years back under keith, 2-0 last season at home 1-0 in the 5-0 season and 3-2 the season we also won 4-1 o thats 6 wins with only 2 losses so we can travel in optimism.
I remember the game but not the year when we went 3-0 up and lost 4-3 with Steve Holmes missing a late penalty.....always a good game at Barnet if not the result.
Snowed 2 years ago too!!! Hope the result is not the same.....5-2, however if that game would have been 10 minutes longer Ben Wright would have got all 5 in a 5-5 draw!! Yeah right!!
Indeed 'twas a pleasure to sample the delights of Barnet twice in recent years. I remember on a Tuesday night, Valentine's Day to be sure, when we won 3-2 after being 2-0 down then came that dramatic 5-0 win exactly eight months later! I've only been to Barnet twice, and they were the only two times City have actually won at Barnet!
I went to the 5-2 game Stratford.
One of my favourites was the 3-2 game in Feb 2006 when we went 2 down only to win 3-2 late on cracking game didnt go to the 5-0 game as I was working as|I will be this weekend.
Barnet is without doubt my favourite away ground. Maybe a strange choice but I love the fact that you are really really close to the action and the ramshackle ground always makes me feel like it is a proper football match. I must admit that the cracking games I have seen there have influenced this decision. The 3-2 win on Valentine's Day would definitely be in my top 5 Lincoln matches, with the 5-0 the following season a contender too. I even really enjoyed the 5-2 hammering we got in 2008, especially the snowstorm that started as soon as their first goal hit the net.
