Steve Guinan yet again scored a goal past the Imps to condemn Chris Sutton to his first defeat as Lincoln manager. In a game contested between two very poor sides, Guinan's goal with twenty minutes left was pretty much the only time either keeper was tested.

Northampton started the match brightly with Guttridge and Guinan combining to set up Rodgers, but he could only shoot well wide of the target. In a slow first half, Northampton also won the game's first corner when Watts put it behind the line in the 12th minute, the corner being wasted.

Dunn claimed a Torres centre before, on the 30 minute mark, City finally got anywhere near the Northampton goal as Oakes sent a free kick towards goal and sailing well over the bar.

Pulis was booked for dissent before Torres was booked for diving, that despite that he would have been through on goal otherwise. That was the final action of a first half where City hadn't really shown anything.

Kovacs headed an Oakes free kick over the bar before McKay was replaced by Adebayo Akinfenwa for the hosts. Shane Clarke was booked for City before Akinfenwa hit a shot straight at Burch from distance.

Sutton's habit of swapping Oakes and with Kerr continued as the latter came on the former with just over an hour gone. Pulis was replaced by Jamie Clarke following on from the Southampton loanee coming close to getting a red card after another foul.

With neither side creating any clear cut opportunities, it was always going to take a mistake or close range open goal to open the scoring, and that's what happened. A free kick was played in and with City's defence standing still again, Burch was helpless as Guinan prodded into the net with what was effectively an open goal.

Janos Kovacs, in his first game back from a suspension for picking up five yellow cards, rather unsurprisingly picked up his sixth as he climbed all over a defender whilst trying to get to a header.

Ian Pearce came on for his IMps debut but City couldn't force a decent chance and came away with a deserved nothing.
