Sergio Torres scored the winning goal the Imps after a much improved display against Aldershot. The Imps created several chances and with a midfield that seemed to push much higher up the pitch, it only seemed a matter of time before City scored.
Shane Clarke had the game's first chance when he blasted a shot in following a free kick, Jaimez-Ruiz saving his low effort. Although it wasn't exactly a speedy start, the Imps were on top but couldn't really force any decent chances, seemingly a case of the same old story. City appealed for a penalty after Herd seemingly handled a Torres flick, only for the referee to ignore it.
Played switched down the other end and the tricky Marvin Morgan forced Burch into a good save after getting beyond Kovacs. City then somehow managed to survive a freak of football as Louie Soares' shot was deflected beyond Burch and towards goal, Kirk Hudson, less than a yard out, head it straight at Watts and Morgan shot the rebound wide of the target.
Hughton had a goalbound effort go behind for a corner before Butcher just failed to connect with a header. A Butcher header from a corner just before half time failed to trouble the goalkeeper.
Oakes hit a free kick over early on the second half before Burch finely saved a Morgan effort. With the midfield pushing up on a more than regular basis, Shane Clarke found himself free in the area but could only direct his effort into the Stacey West.
Superb passing between Hughton, Butcher and Oakes saw the latter unleash an effort from 40 yards, only to be denied by an equally brilliant save from the goalkeeper. Butcher had two excellent chances saved by the goalkeeper, the first after being put through one-on-one and the second was a header at the back post.
Scott Kerr came on for Oakes and within a minute, the Imps took the lead their second half display had deserved. Butcher played a clever ball through the middle and Torres ran onto it, the Argentinean running through the middle and slotting it beyond the goalkeeper to give City their first home goal in a month.
Donnelly hit a free kick over in the final chance of the game and Chris Sutton became the first Imps boss since Alan Buckley in 2001 to win his first game in charge.
