It's Chris Sutton

By theimps.tk
September 28 2009

Former England striker, Chris Sutton, has been appointed as the new manager of Lincoln City, much to the surprise of virtually every fan.

Sutton was a name virtually no-one had even contemplated until it was mentioned in the Lincolnshire Echo this morning. It comes as a shock appointment due to the other applicants who were quite far in the process, such as Jon Pemberton and Gary Brabin.

This is a risk for the Imps due to Sutton having no management experience whatsoever.

We'll bring you more news on this later.

I'd like to know what his experience of Non-League football is???

Does the SPL count??

Apparently the non league experience is from Ian Pearce, he has been playing non league for a while now!!??

Strange one for me.....little disappointed!! Feel it is a PR move rather than a good sound decision.

What on the gods earth are the management doing - Big mistake! Ian Pearce player coach too???

Where do these guys "tick the boxes" Dorrian??!!??

Jesus wept - John Pemberton was the best option by miles... these boys have no idea.

Someone buy out these "community club" muppets

Big Gamble - But I will give him 100% backing until he shows me otherwise. This guy IS our new Manager and nothing will change that now. I wish him every success and I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do.

Give the guy a chance before slating him and the board. Judge him 6 months down the line. We'll know about him and the decision to hire him.

Druid - well said.....he is indeed our new manager and brings a different experience.....a winning one!!! Premier League, SPL under O'Neill.
I admit being a little disappointed, I wanted Brabin but lets get behind him and see what he can do for us.....expect a good link with the Villa and lets see if he can bring some good loanees to boost a lacklustre moral in a good squad of players.

Good Luck Chris

In addition to that, surely he can give a mis-firing strikeforce a point in the right direction......and Pearce was a bit of a no-nonsense defender.....it has the potential!!!

Its a disaster. No lower or non league experience, been out of the game for a while. Ian Pearce is playing for Kingstonian and might have something to offer, I suppose, but it looks like the board have been seduced by a bit of "glamour".
I'm trying to remember if Sutton was ever a real leader on the pitch? Has he even got his coaching badges?
Don't get me wrong, I'll be there tomorrow night cheering the lads on, and I'll give Sutton the benefit of the doubt, but this seems like the wrong man to me.

Interesting decision, and one out of left field.

Considering he has no managerial experience whatsoever that I know of this can only be a gamble.

What he does bring, however, is a very good background in how to be a centre-forward - something this club is sadly lacking.

Considering we have been asking the board to make a gamble or two perhaps we shouldn't moan. This is a calculated risk, and probably one worth taking.

I rated him as a player - very difficult to handle and a good eye for goal.

If he is as good a manager as he was a player I will be well happy.

I will give my full support in the meantime anyway.

Agree with the last two posts - an interesting appointment and only time and results will tell if its a good one, ie if they team are promotion contenders NEXT season (and in the SAME league!).

Without wishing to be as negative as some of the first posts, two cautionary names:-
1. Allan Clarke - 'big name' managers don't always work here, although I'm old enough to counter that with David Herd, who fell short of promotions but achieved some success and made some good signings.
2. Glen Hoddle - 'I'm better than you lot' - premier league players working with league 2 journeymen might prove frustratiing for both - Chris Fagan might do ok under them, it will be interesting to see what they make of some of the others.

Results, dear boys, results.

I think it's a great appointment, it shows the board are looking forward, surely the easiest option would have been to appoint any of the others that applied.
I'm sick of taking on managers that have failed at other clubs, lets give the lad a chance, mind you I remember the last England player to manage the club!!

Can't believe some people are whinging already! I think it's a terrific appointment, I was worried we'd end up with another bloke who's failed in his previous jobs and we'd end up in this situation again in year or two.

Yes it's a gamble, but it's something a bit different to what we've tried and failed with over the last decade or more, give him a chance, get behind him and it could be the best thing that's happened to LCFC for some time.

It certainly is a gamble but we needed to gamble to have any chance of success. A club like Lincoln had no chance of getting a manager who had the sort of track record that would garuantee success.

I'm happy to gamble on someone with Sutton's standing in the game rather then take the perceived safe option of a manager who's knocked around the lower leagues with no record to speak of.

What were Lincoln's other options Brabin not given 2nd interview,Pemberton turned the club down as we did not have the finances to give him or what Brabin wanted either.
I was informed 2 weeks ago that Sutton and Pearce had approached the club all rumour of course but then it was all quiet till today.
It looks like we could be on the way up ,all we need now is a rich investor to buy out the board?

Any managerial appointment is a gamble.

Having read some of the articles other posters have linked to, this particular appointment seems to be a better gamble than most. Sutton can talk the talk in measured tones compared with the hyperbole of his predecessor. He's worked under some excellent managers, lets see if he can put what he's learnt into practice.

Totally underwhelmed and now quite worried for our future. Also concerned about the investment rumour - was the appointment based on merit? Still, its done now and we have to get behind the bloke.

We could be pulling all sorts of names of the hat in terms of comparisons for the rest of the week, but the truth is that he is an entirely unknown quantity so could obviously turn out great, mediocre, or very badly, as would any manager. I'm quietly satisfied with the choice and am happy that we haven't gone for someone like Davey or Brabin personally. It is a gamble by the board, but in fairness, Schofield wasn't such a bad pick considering the improvement we saw in the standard of football in his first year, Jackson did pick up confidence around the club and saved us from relegation (the other leading candidate Brian Little sent Wrexham down with barely a whimper), so at this stage, we all have to try and believe in this appointment, get behind Sutton, Pearce and the players, and do our bit in getting us moving forward. There has been a really bad feeling around the club for some time now which needs to go ASAP or otherwise we could find ourselves with a rookie manager in a relegation dogfight. However, if Sutton can get us organised and scoring some goals, two things we haven't been or looked like doing for nearly a year, and also sort out the deadwood and underperforming players, we could still have a decent season. I for one hope that some passing football will return to Sincil Bank, as only the hardcore will continue to turn up if we serve up the kind of dross that we have been doing for the last couple of years. Up the Imps!

The change will give the Club a lift, although some of the existing squad will be worried for their places in the starting eleven.

Hope he picks a new captain and quickly installs some belief in the team. Quite how he will improve their technical ability is another issue altogether.

A bold choice; just have to hope it works.

Sutton hasn't committed to anything, but one of the things he repeated constantly in his interviews (there were others and he really needs to widen his use of cliches) was that we needed to start winning football matches.

If he has learned anything in the last 20 years in football it should be that only results will win you time. If he is serious about this, he needs to win by fair or foul and then build. He has certainly proven he is not shy about saying he is right when he believes he is and he will need to carry that ruthless mouth into ruthless action if he is going to turn us around quickly.

If he starts looking at playing pretty football, in ignorance of tactics, hard men opponents and crappy Division 4 pitches in winter he won't get the opportunity to build a sandcastle, let alone a platform to manage in the Premiership.

This is the 4th Management team for this iteration of the board in 4 years. Chris your not stupid; do the maths, smell the roses, understand. They have nowhere to go if this goes titsup and you can bet your life that Corporal Jones will be on hand to make the decisions if we aren't in a better position by Christmas.

That said I hope everything goes swimmingly.

There is no such thing as a manager with a track record to GUARANTEE success but, nonetheless, I understand what you're saying Hully. I don't necessarily agree, though. I'd love to know why we didn't go and get Ronnie Moore when Jackson was sacked, why we didn't go straight to him with an offer he couldn't refuse. He has a track record (go check it out) as close to the type you're talking about and was available at the time. If we couldn't afford him then no worries, of course, but if we overlooked him for footballing reasons then I believe Dorrian and Co have made a very big mistake. It seemed to me that Dorrian made a rod for his own nack with that premature, daft, 'we want a young manager' comment. Risks are to be taken when there's no better option available - we took one when there was.

Anyway, Sutton? On the playing side I remember him as a very good player. Managerially, no experience of management, no experience of the lower leagues, presumably no empathy with duff players: there's nothing there to get me excited about his appointment. Hope very much that the 4 min interview on BBC Sport doesn't accurately reflect his character, as he came across as uncharismatic, not especially energetic and also as not particularly intelligent. These may seem like minor points but I personally consider tham very important, especially the latter. Always seems odd to me how inteligence seems to be overlooked when considering a manager's qualifications. You only had to listen to Schofield (and I loved the guy) for 20 seconds, for instance, to know it'd be tough for him.

But I ramble: 2 predictions then, at least one of which I hope to have rammed back down my keyboard:

1. Rotherham up as champions.
2. Us in a battle. We won't go down because we have some decent defenders/keeper, but it won't be pretty.

Lastly, to those who say 'can't believe ur having a pop before he's even started' etc, why the hell not?? I (and others) are simply saying what we think - it doesn't mean we'll be supporting the new appointments any less. I'll still be drinking my cans of Asahi cheering Imps goals on Skysports Scorecentre in the middle of the Japanese night!

The reason we didn't offer anything to the likes of Ronnie Mooore is simple we didn't even have the money to attract Brabbin or Pemberton, they wanted x amount to bring in the players they wanted and the fact is Lincs don't have it or anyone on the board who could dip into their wallet.
Sutton approached lincs a few weeks ago and if the rumour is true agreed to put monies into the club.
Vitals did a Q&A with Steff Wright and he admitted that the transfer monies had kept the playing budget at 60%, of what we don't know.
The reality is the playing budget has brought in the dross we have now and next year if the crowds stay at 3k then the budget will be slashed.
We have been saying for weeks investment is needed either a very rich investor or the fans take up the challenge like AFC wimbledon fans did and continue to do but that takes a certain amount of balls to do that one.
