Rossendale United vs. Leigh Genesis preview

Leigh Genesis are back on the road to Wembley on Saturday afternoon when they play their second FA Cup game of the season when travel to Vodkat Premier League side Rossendale United for a First Qualifying Round tie. A Joe Evans goal was enough for Leigh to see off Runcorn Linnets in the Preliminary Round at Crilly Park, whilst hosts Rossendale won through with an impressive 5-2 home win over Cammell Laird, Leigh's league rivals and a division above Rossendale.
Genesis boss Mark Maddox has a largely full strength side to choose from, with only player/assistant manager Gary Scott a doubt after he left the field in stoppage time of Tuesday's 1-0 home league win over Garforth Town after picking up an injury. New signings James Olsen and Steve Brockley will find themselves in contention, while Tom Obasi will be looking to retain his spot on the left hand side of midfield after an impressive full debut in Tuesday night's Crilly Park victory.
Maddox was pleased to see his side get off the mark with their first league win of the season on Tuesday evening, though the margin wasn't as large as he'd like.
"I thought we did alright on Tuesday, but I still expect a lot more from the lads. We shouldn't have been hanging on at the end and I thought we should have scored more goals with the amount of chances we created, especially in the first half."
Looking ahead to Saturday's FA Cup test, a tie that has £3,000 on offer for the victors, Maddox is looking forward to the challenge.
"Rossendale are a well organised side and, first and foremost, we know that we will have to compete with them from start to finish, but if we apply ourselves correctly then I'm sure that it's a game that we are capable of winning."
Rossendale were relegated from the Evo-Stik League Division One North last season and are currently in thirteenth position in the Vodkat Premier League, with their 1-0 win at Winsford United last Saturday being only their second victory from their first seven league outings.
Leigh's last visit to Dark Lane came on the opening day of last season when a first half Steven Flitcroft penalty and second half goals from Chris Baguley and Jordan Stepien sealed a 3-1 win for Genesis, with only Chris Dykes and Andy Heald still at the club from that day's line up thirteen months ago.
Rossendale's Dark Lane home is situated in the village of Newchurch, near to Rawtenstall in the Rossendale valley. Exit the M60 at junction 18 to join the M66 towards Bury until you reach the very end of the motorway as it becomes a dual carriageway towards Rawtenstall. At the roundabout that follows, take the dual carriageway past the Shell petrol station and the church in the left-hand lane, heading towards Burnley. At the third set of traffic lights, having passed Asda on your left, turn right into Newchurch Road, with the Rams Head pub on the corner. After about one mile turn right into Staghills Road, with the ground on your right hand side after about four hundred yards.
It is also possible to travel by steam train, the preferred method of a large contingent of Leigh fans on their last visit to Dark Lane, by travelling on the East Lancashire Railway from Bury Bolton Street station to the end of the line at Rawtenstall and then getting a taxi to the ground.
Saturday's kick off is at 3pm with admission costing £7 for adults, £5 for over 65's and £2 for under 16's. Should Saturday's match end in a draw, the replay will take place at Crilly Park the following Tuesday (14th September) with a 7.45pm kick off. Otherwise, Leigh will visit neighbours Warrington Town for a league fixture on that Tuesday, assuming that Warrington also avoid a replay in their own FA Cup tie against North East Counties League side Parkgate.
