A second half blockbuster from Marvin McDonald and an outstanding goalkeeping performance from Andy Farrimond gave Leigh Genesis a deserved Evo-Stik League First Division North victory over Radcliffe Borough at Crilly Park.

With Genesis boss Alan Kershaw absent, injured goalkeeper Phil Priestley took the reigns in the Leigh dugout while player/coach Steve Brockley appeared at centre back, and the pair will be putting their claims forward for the role on a permanent basis as they led the Leythers to their first victory in twelve outings.

Genesis made the perfect start after just six minutes when Nathan McDonald flicked a header against Nick Culkin's crossbar but showed the presence of mind to react first to the rebound and nudge the ball beyond the former Manchester United goalkeeper for his fourth goal in ten appearances this season.

As has been so often the case this season though, Leigh were pegged back just three minutes after taking the lead when confusion between the otherwise flawless Stuart Rudd and young goalkeeper Andy Farrimond allowed Declan Fletcher to nip between the two to reach a loose ball and take the ball around Farrimond before slotting the ball in to the empty net.

Local youngster Farrimond had a quick chance to make up for his part in Radcliffe's goal and he more than made up for it with a terrific save to tip the ball over the crossbar on fourteen minutes after Jason Hart had been superbly played in by ex-Leigh man Richard Chetcuti.

The final chance of the first half fell Leigh's way on thirty six minutes when winger Nikos Papargiris released Nathan McDonald to hare towards the penalty area before cutting inside Radcliffe centre back Craig Flowers and seeing his low shot well saved by Culkin to leave the sides level at the break.

The visitors made an early change in the second half when Ben Wharton replaced Tom Brooks before Nathan McDonald was again denied by Culkin on fifty six minutes with a strike across the face of the goalkeeper that was well saved.

As the clock reached the hour mark, Leigh regained their lead when Nathan McDonald played the ball in to the feet of brother Marvin, who turned towards goal twenty five yards out and unleashed an absolute screamer of a shot that left Culkin clutching at air and the ball flying in to the back of the net for his fifth goal of the season, restoring his one goal lead in the McDonald's private goalscoring contest.

Radcliffe made a pair of substitutions with twenty minutes remaining but it was still Leigh who were creating the better chances and again forcing Culkin in to action, this time bringing an excellent save to tip a curling Connor Millington shot from the edge of the area over the crossbar.

Brockley was withdrawn with ten minutes remaining for Gary Grant while the hardworking Neil Smith was replaced by David Webb with five minutes remaining as Leigh looked to secure the victory through the testing final period, mindful of conceding two late goals to lose the corresponding fixture 3-2 at Stainton Park earlier in the season having led 2-0 with less than ten minutes remaining. There was little chance of a repeat at Crilly Park though and Culkin was once again the barrier between Leigh and a third goal when Nathan McDonald had a great chance in stoppage time but was denied by the goalkeeper's legs, minutes before the hosts could celebrate a well-deserved victory.

Leigh's next outing is an away fixture at Bamber Bridge this Saturday (16th April, 3pm) before welcoming Mossley to Crilly Park for the penultimate home game of the season at Crilly Park the following Tuesday (19th April, 7.45pm).
