A first half goal from Scott Willis ensured that Leigh RMI continued their unbeaten start to the season with a 1-1 draw away to a Redditch United side that had upset the odds in defeating pre-season promotion favourites Tamworth in their previous outing.

Although their first outing of the season could only muster a disappointing 2-0 defeat at Vauxhall Motors, hosts Redditch went in to the game with a huge boost in confidence that came from the victory over a Tamworth side that has now won two of their three games so far after their impressive 2-1 victory at Hyde this afternoon.

Stuart Humphreys' Leigh side made the trip to Worcestershire in similarly confident mood after a magnificent defensive rearguard in the second half in a Holker Street monsoon on Tuesday night helped to clinch a 2-1 victory at Barrow.

That type of confidence proved to be the spark that put RMI in to the lead after twenty four minutes when midfielder Scott Willis scored his first goal since returning to the club in the summer, but only controversy followed the goal when, as he wheeled away to celebrate his goal, Willis was tripped by Redditch man Lee Downes, who was shown a straight red card by the referee for his actions.

With a man advantage, Leigh could have doubled their lead when lively striker Kevin Rapley, a goalscorer in both of RMI's previous league outings this season, sprung the offside trap, only to shoot straight at the goalkeeper when clean through on goal.

That particular miss was compounded on the stroke of half time when Reddich broke clear on the counter attack, with veteran striker Howard Forington heading a cross past John Lamb in the RMI goal to level the scores.

Although the second half saw the introduction of debutant Illicid Dacosta, the main man remained to Rapley as he found himself spurning several goalscoring opportunities, with the draw proving to be an ultimately fair result that prolongs Leigh's unbeaten start to the season, ahead of Harrogate Town's visit to Hilton Park next Saturday.
