Alan Pardew has suggested that the club will be in for a big striker in the summer after the disappointment of missing out on Loic Remy to QPR last month.  Pardew joked he would love to have Van Persie or Rooney at the club but thats not going to happen any time soon and the club are a viable club with realistic targets and a sensible budget, unlike some in the Premier League. He also said that Danny Graham would not have covered the big striker category as he isn't really at the right level for Newcastle.

He told The Gazette;

“You always want another striker.

I want Man United’s position, (Robin) Van Persie, (Wayne) Rooney, (Javier) Hernandez and (Danny) Welbeck – that would be nice!

But we haven’t got that. When we lost out on Remy, it was pretty evident that we weren’t going to get a big striker.

They’re pretty difficult to get over the line.

You look around now, and nobody apart from Remy has really moved, maybe Danny Graham, but I don’t think he’s at that level. I think that’s something we’ll look at in the summer."

Danny Graham, a lifelong Newcastle Utd fan, signed for Sunderland, despite having previously said in an interview that he would stay as far away from Sunderland as possible if he could no longer support Newcastle. He was subsequently booed by fans on Tuesday night as he made his debut to crowds singing "you're scum and you always will be".

In a dig at Queens Park Rangers, who seemed to pick and name and place a bid Pardew added;

“Financially, we did our business – that’s us done. You know how we work here. It’s not like we are QPR, where the owner is putting in his own money.

That’s going on. But they don’t look viable, some of the deals they are doing. We’re viable – that’s what we do.”

The hint at getting a striker in in the summer will reignite the link with Andy Carroll, who Liverpool are expected to be wanting to offload on a permanent deal at the end of the season.

Interesting decision fron him Lee Clarke did the same and was never accepted. I think he would have done well for us he certainly knows his way to goal.Players years ago quite often played for both clubs.Bryan(Pop) Robson,Bob Moncure spelling wrong I think,Christ Waddle who was himself a Sunderland supporter as a lad.He will not be popular for choosing Bsunderland but a better prospect than QPR I guess.Hope he gets relegated with them having said that!

I agree with Pardew though. I couldn't se Danny Graham setting our campagign alight had he have joined Newcastle.

Yes I think you are right would have been good to add him to the squad and use him as an impact player perhaps? That is not what he would have wanted having said that.

He would've been a good squad player, and definitely knows how to score goals on a consistent level, unlike Shola Ameobi. If Shola is good enough for us I dont see why we can't have Danny who is ten times better. Ameobi is one of the most overrated strikers in the history of the top flight history, and will only be remembered because of the goals he's scored againt the mackems.

Point is why have two squad players in ameobi and graham ? Just saps the wage budget Better to wait and get someone who can genuinely push for a starting place .
I just hope we keep hold of tiote and cabaye as with Anita and sissoko we now have a midfield that can rotate and the competition to start will only improve them all this is the model we should be following for strikers and defence not adding fringe players like graham
