Time to get rid, I like the lad so not going to sl@g him off but if he doesn't want to stay then we don't players like this especially in the dressing room and I would have Colo and Williamson over him anyway

At the end of the season do we still get compo because of his age but would try and flog him in Jan

Rumours are Wheater would want to go and can't see him costing much from Boro, and wouldn't want the earth to play in the premiership again

easy question - would anyone start him next weekend, when we have all four senior centre halves available?

my answer is no, so why give him a bumper new deal?

mind you, its possible that the contract williamson signed means he will be the only one of our four first team squad centre backs to be here next season, so maybe taylor should be valued by the club. sol is not getting any younger, and colo's wages will surley be a block to him signing a new deal himself, so there must be a point where he is also available for transfer. or do we run down the clock on a 10m quid signing?

hmm. a quick check tells us that colo has two more season after this one on his current contract. that would mean under normal circumstances he would look to renegotiate anytime from the end of next summer, but we know he wont get another deal like the one he has at the minute.

has to be a possible mover next summer, which would influence the clubs stance on taylor, surely?

Interesting point LMK, never thought about the lengths of other players contract, and there is no way Colo is going to be offered the same amount or anywhere near it, so it means that he maybe he will be off, if the club can cash in on him. Not to sure if it will play a part in Taylor contract talks as you would imagine that Ashley will maybe invest a couple of million and try and bring in a cheap defender, and think that we can do the Williamson business again.

I think it will also mean that all the other players like Smith, Barton, Nolan and the others could be off when contracts are up and we will become a cheap running club. I suppose the Taylor deal will tell us exactly the direction of the club.

Depends on why he is turning down the deal, is it just money or playing week in week out, as he must find it hard knowing that he probably isn't going to be the first name on the teams sheet compared to the season we went down

i think at the time of shola signing on again under kinnear, the reasoning was the same. viduka, owen and martins werent expected/welcome to stay, so for better or for worse shola was tied down so as not to lose all of the senior strikers at once. perhaps if carroll had been a year older at the time there would have been less inclination on the clubs behalf to re-sign ameobi, but we'll never know.
but the back four could be significantly weakened next season if taylor was joined in leaving by colo and enrique, due to both being high earners who may not be offered the same terms to stay. this should come into the clubs thinking, though its very hard to second guess whether they have already identified targets should all of these players leave in one hit.

I hate to say it, but I don't think we can hold on to Enrique regardless of his wages. Capdevilla is getting older, and with Enrique's form recently, I wouldn't be surprised if he wanted to go back to Spain to get matches in front of Del Bosque prior to Euro 2012. Other than Cole and Evra, you'd be hard pressed to find a better left back in the league (I'm counting Bale as a Winger) this season.


BTW: The Liverpool match was his 100th League appearance for NUFC.

so, to realise any kind of fee for jose, he leaves early next summer? a dispiriting reality of modern football is that the more a player improves, the more likely he is to be sold by the majority of clubs. certainly when they reach the standard enrique has maintained for almost the whole season so far.
if he (jose enrique) was to leave, does this make taylor more important to the club? plays a different position, but for continuity in the back line we would be looking for just one new player, rather than two, if the scenario from the posts above did come around, and we lost all of the players named

I think Taylor has played well in the couple of matches he has been back. Sol has been terrible but Taylor's performances have been fine. I don't think we should be too critical of him since he was out for a reasonable period of time. I would pick him over Williamson as I am still unconvinced that Williamson is PL quality. He has been made to look a little weak on the odd occassion this season.

It's a pity that Colo's wages are probably what Taylor is looking at and thinking he deserves the same since he was the senior partner of the pairing when they played together in the past.

However, Taylor needs to understand that Colo would not be offered those sort of wages now and neither would he being he as they are each one half of a centre pairing that got the club relegated two seasons ago.

Obviously Colo will be off unless he is willing to except a massive wage cut and I don't see that as being completely out of the question since other teams would be unwilling to pay his wages unless the likes of Juve, Inter, Valencia or some other big club came in for him. Which I guess is possible. It happened with Boomsong, not that Colo is as bad as he was.

Jose Enrique on the other hand should be resigned at all costs I would rate him as the second most important player at the club behind Carroll. But I agree with the general consensus that we would have a very hard time signing him. Especially since he would demand a big pay rise.

Does anyone know what sort of wages he is on at the moment? I wouldn't imagine they would be that large since he was pretty raw when we first got him.

well, we paid over 6m if memory serves, so they wont be too low, onthelevee. i'd guess he'd be offered plenty to move though, more than we can/will pay anyway

If the toon are never going to pay them top wages again and we all now they are unlikely to take a pay cut, then the club want to put things into action quick rather than leave them to last minute.

Enrique because of his age and quality would be great if we can keep him and is defo one of the best LB in the country, so we need to try and keep him. If Colo was sold for a decent price then I would be gutted but if the money can be re-invested in the team I would be against the idea, as I think it was reported last season he was on 80k per week.

Some good points made about players coming to the end of their contracts as a factor but....... If he has turned down a contract that has actually been improved then he really can just f00k off. As I have said before I really dont think he is as good as he thinks he is.

After signing his contract he was a first teamer in the side that got relegated, lost his place to Williamson last season after another injury and then a third shoulder dislocation. So if we gave him more money then we would actually be rewarding him for going backwards. He knows that the big contracts are not getting dished out so shouldnt be surprised that he isnt getting offered 50-60 grand. I wouldnt mind if he was pulling up trees but the sh17e he/his agent spouts makes my blood boil. It says that he is desperate to stay at the toon but that the club hasnt made the right offer. f00king sh17e. If he was desperate to stay he would sign on the same terms never mind an improved contract. Why not sign on the same terms but with the incentives that if he gets back his regular first team place then it ups by 5k a week and the same if he ever makes captain. No, he wants it all now.

I hope he goes even if there is a chance of others also leaving as I just hate his attitude. There is obviously been the talk of Wheater and also Curtis Davies. Not sure on Davis as he has also had a few injuries but seems to need a move and he used to be a top player. If the net is right he would only have a year left at the end of the season.

You're right LMK, I woudnt play him when the others are back. This season our defence hasnt looked to bad at all and with Simpson playing its even better. I admit that both Taylor and Sol have been thrown in a bit and will obviously be rusty but I would give them some games in the reserves, possibly alternating each of them to partner Kadar.

With a few recent threads about past and present players I thought I would do a little digging into players contracts. With that, Ashleys transfer policy, young players coming through or targets we could possibly go for I was wondering where you see Newcastle going to in the future? What the team could/would be in the next few years? and which players would you move on.

I wont include every player but most of the first team or fringe players will be below and the figure alongside will be how many years they have left at the end of this season.

We all know there are some top earners coming to the end of their deals. If some are willing to take cuts then I could see them staying. If not I can see a few running them down and leaving for free which could actually be better for us rather than weakening our squad for a small transfer fee. On the other hand I think LMK posted a while back that if a player sees out his contract then he is entitled to another full years money. This could twist the arm of Ashley/CH into letting a few go for a nominal fee.

Players coming to mind for the end of this season are the obvious Smith. Barton if Gosling/Vukic can step up or even Nolan even though I think he will stay for another year at least. With the young strikers/goalkeepers coming through then maybe Harper, Shola and Loven.

I think they need and will get Jose signed up soon enough with only a year left and may have to listen to offers for Taylor this window coming if he doesnt sign.

Fringe players I can see us listening to offers for could be Xisco, Best and Raylor.

My main point is that Newcastle could be very different in a year or two obviously depending on how much money we get to spend or if we stay in the premier. Its exciting to see some of the young lads coming through and lets hope they have a good show tonight.

FFS, I'm amazed at how much speculation this has ignited.

Taylor will be moved in January if possible. It doesn't make sense to try to extend a relationship that doesn't work. He wants to be paid like an important player at a big club but the reality is he can't stay in the lineup here. It is a shame, as Kadar doesn't appear to be quite ready and Campbell is clearly past it. But there are other central defenders of his quality that can come in and be our 3rd choice, and also others who can take the place of Colo when/if the time comes. Wheater, Dunne, Lescott and Davies for example all are/will soon be available. A guy the quality of Gary Cahill was sold not too long ago. Man U plucked Smalling from non-league ball. Then there are loans, as guys like De Laet, Bartley and Bruma will need places to play. And why not think we can pull another Williamson? Consider that he was another Bassong.

Something that is getting overlooked also: he's hurt his shoulder in a similar manner 3 times now. That's a type of injury that often recurs and whose effects linger.

Can't see how we won't offer Jose an improved contract. Maybe he'll move, maybe he won't. Not sure about the Spain speculation; they might have chosen Enrique before and have preferred to play Arbeloa out of position. I'm not sure what he can do to convince them. He should already be starting for Spain.

personally tunyc, i was trying to second guess the clubs position. i thought that was obvious, i wanted rid before it was even popular to want him out of the first eleven!

the club will be looking at filling four berths at centre half next season. williamson has one; kadar may or may not be in contention - the coaches know best on that, promising players are sold to lower leagues when the critical stage of development simply doesnt happen, so lets wait and see; colo may have one - pros and cons outlined above; and that just leaves sol who i think may be too old for another season, personally.
if the club dont sell taylor in january, he will cost a few million quid as he runs down his contract. it would make sense to factor that when considering what 2 or possibly 3 new players would cost in that position. whether the club agree with what i call sense is another thing altogether.

oh, and smalling cost man utd 12mil, though i take your point as he wouldnt have cost fulham much two seasons before.

There are players in the lower leagues and non league who can step up, but every club wants them so unless we have an amazing scouting team it will be hard, it is also getting in quick and snapping them up before anybody else goes for them. For some players we have the advantage of the club, big crowds and a chance to play but maybe clubs may offer more

It will be interesting to see how the club goes with the contracts, and if we are not going to play any ball with them then we need to be flogging them in the summer before the deals run out, which means we need to be buying players in Jan, giving them time to settle and getting them ready for the next season if they need to step up
