Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle v Nottingham Forest

By Tyne-Talk
March 28 2010

Newcastle United host rivals Nottingham Forest tomorrow evening in a 7.45pm kick off, live on Sky Sports. Newcastle have won four of the last six games having drawn the other two, whilst Forest have won three (all at home) and lost three (all away from home) of their last six.

Forest have conceded 8 goals in their last three away games, whilst Newcastle have played two home games in their last six and scored 9 goals conceding just 1, with 16 goals scored and 6 goals conceded in total from their last six matches.

Chris Hughton will be hoping to welcome back Jose Enrique (hamstring), Peter Lovenkrands (ankle) and Alan Smith (ankle) all of whom have missed recent games through injury. Also hoping for pitch time are Mike Williamson (broken hand) and Fitz Hall (hamstring) leaving just Shola Ameobi (foot) and Steven Taylor (knee/broken jaw) sidelined.

Joey Barton who returned last week will be expecting to increase his match fitness by being named in the starting eleven, but could have to be satisfied with a starting place on the bench.

Nottingham Forest manager Billy Davies could see the return of James Perch (ankle) who has had a pain killing injection in a bid to play and Joel Lynch (thigh) could play some part as he returns to full fitness.

Forest will be without Paul McKenna and Julian Bennett both knee injuries.

Fact: Forest could become the only team this season to complete the double over Newcastle United, having beaten them 1-0 in the corresponding fixture earlier in the season.

Fact: Newcastle are unbeaten in 9 games, whereas Forest have lost their last 7 away matches.

Obviously they will be bang up for the match with West Brom dropping points but we shouldnt stand off them.

Would be quality to have Williamson, Jose and Loven back but would be disappointed if Guthrie was dropped for Smith. I cant see it really and the amount of goals we have scored with Guthrie in the side is no coincidence.

Smith and Barton on the bench for me.

Dropping Guthrie would be a huge mistake, I don't see it happening.

This is the biggest game of the year, in my opinion. A win here is a massive step toward promotion. Forest have two hard games immediately following this one: Bristol and Cardiff.

I can't believe we haven't scored a goal. Pitch seems very greasy, players are sliding all over the place.

Surely it's only a matter of time.

We had a couple balls fall to feet in the boxes, but too much congestion. They are defending well. Regardless, the vast majority of those 45 minutes were played in their half. Williamson has been a rock, and the wingers look up for it. Let's hope we can nick a goal or two.

Great goals from Shola and Enrique. First game back for Barndoor and he took it well.

Routledge was massive, as was Jonas. Guthrie's corners and first few free kicks (the last one was beautiful, just didn't get past Camp) weren't great but he controlled the pace of the game well. Nolan played well, but ultimately this one came down to our back 4 being the best in the league.

That's right Carys. And if we win the next two, it doesn't matter what else happens-Forest's max point total is 88 now. We have 83. Two wins and it's over...

(edited to remove glaring mathematical error...I studied history...sorry!)

6 more points, and I'm all for playing the kids. Time to throw Inman and Vuckic (if he's healthy) into the fire. We've seen Kadar under pressure, and he's performed well. May as well get Barton a few games to spark interest.

just watching the replay of joses goal. the one two was via shola's backheel, and it was perfectly played to set enrique through. from there he moved it to his right foot and hit it pretty cleanly. total mayhem afterwrds, and a booking for taking his hsirt off.to be fair,we was miles away, lost in the moment

But in the famous words of Joe: He can only score when he doesn't mean to. Cracking shot, but he might as well play blindfolded.

i hear the shouts for the kids, but colo needs to play ahead of the world cup, and williamson has missed a lot over the last 6 months so shoudl be allowed to carry on to. keep the first team happy first, surely. stick the kids in one at a time for a game each, and go for as many points as poss, yeah?

We are up..

If Forest even draw and we win they could only match our point total. Remember though that Forest have lost their last 6 games away or maybe its 7 and they're playing Cardiff, no pushover.

Its a formality now. I don't fear any repercussions from saying that.

It was never going to be easy as Forest had to get stuck into us. They passed the ball well but our defence really did class.

First half was poor and we lost the ball quite easily during the match but Im sure the terrible weather didnt help. It was all about the result rather than performance.

Jose and Williamson were class with Colo not far behind. Loven was full of running same too was Jonas but felt he could have released the ball quicker a few times. Might be a bit harsh on the lad as at times he had three Forest players around him and he gained a few free kicks in good positions.

Great to see Jose score his first goal for us and he had to be man of the match. The whole stadium was chanting his name when they were leaving.

Class.

By the way, hat off to Billy Davis for the what he said about us and Hughton after the game. Great crack.

Great result and we should know finish off with the title, but I would like to see us give the kids a shot, as next year it will be hard to give them games unless we get injuries, time to give them some experience and understand the call for Colo with the world cup but the others need to step a side and give the kids some games
