Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Coventry City

Newcastle United host Coventry City in tomorrow's midweek clash on the back of a lucky draw against Swansea City and a 3-0 defeat at Pride Park. Chris Hughton's side have secured just two wins in their last six games, both at home, two defeats and two draws all on the road and will be looking to take advantage of this home game. Coventry travel on the back of two wins, three consecutive draws and a defeat six games ago but have failed to score more than one goal a game in their last five.
Newcastle have a string of injuries to contend with, Shola Ameobi (hamstring), Jose Enrique (hamstring), Nicky Butt (thigh), Joey Barton (foot) and Steven Taylor (knee) are all sidelined, whilst good news come in the return of Jonas Gutierrez who has recovered from a muscle strain in time for the match.
Andy Carroll is likely to start after keeping Newcastle in the game at the weekend and will be looking to find the back of the net as Newcastle intend to extend their decent home form, whilst Leon Best prepares to face his former team-mates.
In a bid to extend their current lead, manager Chris Hughton will be hoping his side will once again find the confidence which led them to the top of the Championship table.
Coventry, who have won 8 games this season on a single goal look likely to hand Jon Stead his debut after he signed on loan from Ipswich until the end of the season, whilst Aron Gunnarsson could feature after recovering from a shin injury. Meanwhile both James McPake (back) and David Bell (shin) remain doubts ahead of the game.Newcastle Utd |

Slow start. Their goal, did that come off our left with Enrique out? Just wondering how they got behind us.
Good result but again somewhat cosmetic. Morrison hit the post in the first 10 minutes. On the other hand, Carroll is finding goals, so...all's well that ends well!
Just in from the match. It was a canny performance without being startling. They only had a couple of chances and we kept the ball well.
Wingers were class espec Jonas even though Rout got MOTM. My MOTM was Guthrie as he really made us tick in the midfield. Nolan was also busy around the box.

Colorado, their goal came from our right with us backing off them too much. Seeing the goals again it looked like Morrison slipped when taking the shot.
Colo and Williamson were solid.

This is my first experience following the ccc. I'm coming to understand the grand drama-and potentially tragedy-of the playoffs. If the season ended today, there's no doubt WBA, Forest and NUFC should be the clubs going up...
You better hope we come up in the top 2 as the play-offs are awful, it is not the best team that get promoted and usually the team that scrape into 5th or 6th place from a great run at the end of the season.
Oh, believe me-I know about the form team stealing the playoffs...from American sports...but having been the benificiary of it, I guess I can't complain too much.
If last season was the good olds days of the playoffs then we may have been playing top flight football. If you finished 3rd bottom in the top flight then you would play 5th in the division below. Bring those days back it added more excitement
just thought of something. how would the promotion places change ie wud 4 go up, if pompey go bust ?

As a Louisiana native, I can say that form into the playoffs is over rated. 3 straight losses to end the regular season, 3 straight victories in the playoffs to take the crown.
You guys rested everyone possible for those last couple games, though-just like the Colts. It's not a universal rule, but winning the playoffs is as much about being hot at the right time as having the most talent/best tactics.
Good result, performance was nothing too special but we deserved the win, were comfortable throughout and Routledge's goal was quality.

With the Premier League rejecting struggling Portsmouth's request for permission to sell players outside the transfer window, what happens to the league if liquidations happen, if it did then this is how the table would look if they left the league, it has serious consequences on the champions league and relegation places.

Meant to say that the only fair way would be scrap all the games, so some teams lose points were other gain them.

...but if you scrap all pompey games, do you replay other fixtures where players booked or sent off against pompey would have played, but were suspended because of things which happened against the team who have been removed? what about injuries in those matches? hard to work that out fairly.
i'm sure someone at the fa will have worked something out which involves west ham being saved, either way!

if a team contesting second place ends up in the play offs, its a blow to them which must be overcome. the mentality is negative, as they had a chance to go up automaticaly and failed.
but if a team fighting to get into the playoffs from below scrapes in at the death with a few wins, its a bonus and they dont suffer the same sense of loss. the mentality is much more positive, they have less fear of losing than the higher placed side, so the difference in class is negated. nufc fell foul of this when finishing third twenty years ago, and the team who beat them in the playoffs havent shut up about it since. the swines

If Pompey goes into liquadation then they will have to, otherwise they will have to give every team 3 points and an agreed goal difference, what happens if they agree it is 3 goals and lets say another team have played them twice already and won by 1 goal and those couple of goals make the difference, and it stops them from getting a european place or even worse relegated. If they go under then the games are going to get scrapped.
The only way the club can be saved is by giving them the parachute money, but will the premier league do it, if they do then do West Ham ask for the same as they are skint, and every year every club does it. If they are in this much debt and can't get out of it, they won't in the fizzy pop league, so do the premier league throw there money away on a club that will go under anyway.
They can't sell or get money in. Unless they get taken over by somebody with real cash, not the mickey mouse people they have had yet which I can't see. They are screwed and the premier league will need to make a decision

The premier league will have to either loan them the money or give them the parachute money in advance, which I don't think they will do. If they give them the parchute money then the rest of the clubs will have to agree.
If they do either it is a bit of a joke as the championship doesn't do this or let them break the rules, live outside your means and you are scr@w@d, look at what happened to Palace, pushing for a play off of position and now fighting to stay in the league. Nobody wants a club to go under but why should they get special treatment when the other clubs didn't get it
the other clubs arent part of the premier league, it is the league and not the fa which is trying hard to keep pompey afloat. they do not want the global brand damaged by pompey going under whilst in the top flight
