FA CUP DRAW - Toon To Play Argyle

Newcastle United have been drawn away from home against Plymouth Argyle in the 3rd round of the FA Cup to be played over the weekend of the 2nd January 2010. The two sides are miles apart in the Championship table, with Newcastle flying on top spot and Plymouth 2nd from bottom; Hughton's team will be looking to snatch their 2nd win from Plymouth this season after a 3-1 win at SJP in September.
Other games to look out for include; Manchester City v Middlesbrough, Chelsea v Watford and Liverpool v Reading. Whilst fellow Championship sides Leicester City play Swansea and Bristol City host Cardiff. The biggest upset of the round could potentially come from Manchester United v Kettering/Leeds.

Hopefully the kids will get a run out, don't want to risk injuries when we are flying in the league

I couldnt give a Monkeys about the cup this year.
Our league form is good but its a long time till next May.
We must maintain our game and ensure that we secure an automatic promotion place.

Agreed. Get the kids another game. We're not going to win this competition, anyway. True story.

Oh, right...couldn't find any very official source, but his wikipedia page for example says that he'll be out another couple of months, which sounds right to me.
Looks like Baheng is out for a couple months too. Shame, as he was banging (pun intended) them in for the ressies recently.
I agree that the FA Cup shouldn't be much of a priority this season. I'd give Krul, Kadar, Pancrate, Ranger, Geremi and so on a game, so that the fringe players have a chance to stake a claim in the team, while not risking any of the key players. We still have a minimum of 26 games this season, so wouldn't want to increase the load on the key players unnecessarily.

agree with the sentiment wasim, but i wouldnt change so many, especially at the back. we've already seen how the whole team suffers when our defence is weakened. lets have a look at pancrate and lua lua yeah, but i think geremi will be away to the ANC by then. that front two looks interesting, i really want to see that pair together, so lets do it with guthrie playing his preferred central position behind them, and smith to keep things together.

Wasim and LMK I think you are picking to many of the important players, personally I don't give a f@ck about the cup and want to see fringe or the kids to have a run out. Rest the first team
Agreed, TTID. Last pointless cup game saw Ameobi (still out) and Jonas (back for what, two games?) go down. I can't justify to myself sending out S. Taylor, Simpson, Enrique, Smith and Ameobi. We will not win this competition with the squad we have, so why risk the Championship season just to survive a round or two?

i think that exposes the young guys to too much pressure. nurturing young players doesnt just involve giving them time on the pitch, its about easing them into the team in the right circumstances. also, i chose only 6 regular starters, and of those guthrie only gets a game out of position, so thats half a team i changed!
a strong spine gives the fringe players a chance without putting all of the pressure on them. for example, you cant judge a newbie winger playing ahead of a newbie fullback, its too much. lets get through if possible, our squad is close to fully fit so we neednt go for a total reserve team. remember, playing twice in three days the week before this match will also give a chance to some reserve players, lets use the squad to win all three games and keep the show on the road.
after all, we dont have the option to forfeit, would any seriously take it if we did?!

I concur. The lads should play, but you can't just send out the Reserve team either. If Lua Lua is going to play on the wing, then either Simpson, R. Taylor, or Enrique needs to play on that side too. We need to know if these kids can play with the squad we have or not. Kadar cannot play Center Back without Colo or Taylor back there too.

Guthrie fills Nolan's spot as CF, and Ranger plays up top.
Unless the lads are getting games then how can they get the experience for when we need them, at the moment some of the kids are getting in the team due to injuries but why not give them an extra game and if we lose then it won't be the end of the day
experience yes ttid, thats great, but to really make it worthwhile they should be made comfortable and be allowed to express themselves. thats done by mentoring on the field, which would be done by the handful of senior players in the mix.
play a game with all reserves and you could damage confidence, which would have an effect when we do need them to step up. why not lets give a few of them a positive learning experience alongside smith, taylor, etc, and hope to benefit from it when injuries next hit us?

Wise and good words LMK, putting it like that you are right, but if we go for experience then people like Butt rather Smith should be in the team. The squad players with a blend of youth rather than the ideal starting 11
