Newcastle United have confirmed the signing of 29 year old midfielder Fabrice Pancrate until the end of the season, with the option to extend his contract. Confirmation comes after he performed well in the midweek reserve game against Hartlepool, having been on a 2 week trial with the club.

Pancrate will wear the number 21 shirt for Newcastle but could have to wait before stepping out in-front of the fans to make his debut, as he awaits ratification of his registration and international clearance.

The 6ft 2in Frenchman is predominately a right sided midfielder but is capable of playing upfront. Many class him as a striker; in the 2008/2009 season for Paris St Germain he started 15 games, was used as a substitute in 19 games and scored 2 goals with 1 assist.

Prior to concluding the deal, Pancrate's agent Farid Belkacemi had attempted to give good sales pitch.

Belkacemi said;

"Fabrice loves Newcastle. Many clubs in France want him because he is free. Nantes, Strasbourg . . . they offered him a big contract just yesterday but he says: ‘I prefer Newcastle'.

The French don't understand why. They say: ‘But Newcastle are not in the Premier League!' But Fabrice loves the professional environment, the town and the mentality of the supporters.

Of course, he is ambitious, and Newcastle is the only team in the Championship he would play for, because he believes they will soon be back in the Premier League. He told me: ‘I am a black man, but in my blood, I am black and white!'

So we fly back to Newcastle on Monday night and we hope we can sign next week. He is 200 per cent for Newcastle."
