Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Sheffield Utd v Newcastle Utd

By Tyne-Talk
November 1 2009

Newcastle United travel to Sheffield on Monday night hoping to take confidence from their 2-1 win over Doncaster last weekend which came after a worrying run in the Championship. With just 2 wins in their last 6 game Chris Hughton will be desperate to pick up points to secure their position at the top of the table. Sheffield host on the back of a home defeat against Cardiff, one of four defeats in their last six games.

With the top eight teams swapping league places on a weekly basis and the lower half of the table being equally close a win is vital for both teams.

Newly appointed manager Chris Hughton remains without long term absentees Joey Barton and Shola Ameobi, both out with foot injuries. However Fabricio Coloccini (groin) is expected to return after failing to be 100% for last weekend's game. Danny Simpson (ankle) and Steven Taylor (hamstring) are both pushing to return.

For once Newcastle go into a game with more available players than their opponents. Sheffield United are struggling with injuries they look to be without,

Jamie Ward (wrist), Derek Geary (knee), Gary Naysmith (knee), James Harper (knee), Nick Montgomery (medial ligaments), Andrew Davies (knee) and Lee Williamson (back).

Fact: The two sides have met a total of 106 times, Sheffield United have won 46 to Newcastle's 37 with 26 games drawn. However on their most recent tie at Bramell Lane in 2007 Newcastle won 2-1, their first league win at Sheffield United since 1972.

Fact: Newcastle have the best defensive record in the Championship.

Good to see players coming back or will be close, but if they are not fully fit, then may be better to rest them one more game. I think we should win this game as it doesn't seem to be the Sheff United of old, still be a tough game but reckon we will get the 3 points

According to SSN Danny Simpson, Steven Taylor and Coloccini should all be available tonight, that should give the team a lift.

Sheffield aren't a pushover but I think we'll win.

At last a match I can watch, I'm nervous already.

C'mon our team. (Sm128)

NUFC: Steve Harper, Danny Simpson, Tamas Kadar, Fabricio Coloccini, Jose Enrique, Ryan Taylor, Nicky Butt (c), Alan Smith, Jonas Gutierrez, Kevin Nolan, Andy Carroll
Subs: Tim Krul, Danny Guthrie, Marlon Harewood, Geremi, Nile Ranger, Ben Tozer, Ryan Donaldson

It will be interesting to see how our centre backs do. Nice to have Coloccini back, although I would have loved to see Steven Taylor next to him, but Kadar has promise so hope he puts in a good performance. I think we may lack creativity in the centre of midfield and we should have started with Guthrie although having Ryan Taylor play in midfield may see us whip more crosses in. Good luck lads, a win here and our season may just start getting that lost momentum back!

Glad to see Kadar has kept his place and Simpson in his correct position. Think Colo will mean we try and pass the ball a bit more and not just lump it up. Jonas and Taylor on the wings will hopefully get some chances going but would have prefered Smith holding and Guthrie pushing on. Guthrie can also stick his foot in but is a bit better on the ball and would create more.

Come on.

Maybe playing butt and Smith, two holding players will free up Nolan and let him play a free role

Must be Ranger-Carroll-Harewood up front...they're not going to blow anyone away with pace, but that's a lot of big men to keep the ball and draw fouls. That's how you run the subs, Chris!

Harper save was world class, if that was done in the premiership then it would be showed all week on sky sports. Wasn't the best performance but thought Harper was excellent on the 3 saves that he had to make, this was Enrique's best game for ages and have sl@gged of Carroll in this division but what a performance. Hard to choose a man of the match today but probably go for Carroll even though Harper saves deserve something.

Top of the league were we belong. Well done to the toon (Sm60)

Great battling performance like we thought we would be up against.

Back five were solid, Jose was immense and harper pulled off some class saves. Glad Kadar played and he didnt do anything wrong against two busy forwards.

Carroll was a beast and espec against Morgan.

We still lack impact through the middle though and it is too much to expect Carroll and Nolan to do everything. If They are putting shifts in like that we need people running onto help them. Think a winger is a must in January amongst a few others.

We have done in these last 2 games what we failed to do in the 4 before that which is grind out a result, can't be expecting to win 4-0 every week, going to be a much bigger battle than that and these 2 games show we do have some fight in us.

Agreed. I'll take an ugly 1-0 grinder every day of the week. Keeping a clean sheet in an away fixture against a squad that just missed promotion last year is a good result regardless of how the front five play.

Would rather play good football that you want to watch but if means playing good football and losing regular are playing scrappy football and winning then I would rather have the 3 points. Sheff United may not be doing that well at the moment but they will be around the playoffs again come the end of the year, so it was a bloody good result
