Manager Alan Shearer has put yesterday's defeat in Liverpool behind him and is now concentrating on next Monday's clash with Middlesbrough. Both north east sides are fighting a relegation battle with this game being a must win match for both teams.

He said;

"The game at Anfield was never going to seal our fate, but the Middlesbrough match is a massive one, not just for us but for them as well.

It will go a long way to deciding the outcome of the relegation fight for both of us. There's no question that it is the biggest game of my Newcastle career.

It's the biggest game in the Newcastle career of anyone who is connected to the club at the moment."

On the Liverpool game he said;

"The best team won, I've no complaints, I thought the first goal was offside but I don't think it would have changed the course of the game. But this game wasn't going to seal our fate, it's the next two. Nothing's changed.

They hit the bar three times, and if you look at it that way, we were lucky to keep it at three. I was disappointed with the way the goals came about, though, one from an offside position and two from set pieces.

That's not me griping, though, because we would have lost anyway.

The biggest frustration since I came here has been our failure to score goals. Not many have come here, though, and not many will, because Liverpool are a very good football team.

But players were given players to pick up (at set pieces) and didn't. That's the disappointing thing. We haven't been creating chances that's been a problem.

Today's game was always going to be very difficult to try and score in, because they're a very, very good team. But it doesn't mean I'm not very disappointed."
