Steven Taylor's frustration at sitting on the bench could increase after Joe Kinnear insisted that as a manager he will be looking ahead at what team is being put before them before selecting his own. Before being injured in November Taylor was a constant fixture in the Newcastle starting eleven, but since picking up an injury he has returned not to the starting lineup but to an ever strong bench. Just last week Bob Moncur gave a lengthy interview to The Chronicle detailing how Taylor will have to prove himself in order to push his way back into Newcastle's defence, but with Sebastien Bassong and Coloccini proving themselves on the pitch, it looks like Taylor could struggle.

Moncur said;

"Not so long ago we were saying that United were crying out for central defenders. Now they have three very decent ones in Bassong, Coloccini and young Taylor.

Taylor is a player I rate, but he now finds himself sitting on the bench and he will have to fight his way back in.

The back four is looking really settled these days and I must single out Jose Enrique, who did very well at Portsmouth, including playing the biggest part in making the second goal for Obafemi Martins.

I have always felt Habib Beye was a class player, and when I first clapped eyes on Bassong I thought he was not a bad player at all."

Today Kinnear told the Chronicle that Taylor will have to wait his turn, but that he believes he is captain material and will captain the club in the future;

"Tayls is a good player, but he should take a leaf out of Damien Duff's book.

Duff was always in the team when I got here, but he got injured and was out for two weeks, and Charles N'Zogbia came in and did well.

It's hard for both Taylor and Duff to get back in again, but I have to take on board who we're playing before I select the side."

it could be doing taylor a favour, reminding him that he needs to keep working hard. he could still become a great player if he is prepared to accept that he is not yet the final article as a player. i hope kinnear is talking to him regularly about his strenghths and weaknesses

We have had good results clean sheets with taylor out of the team, prefer coloccini with bassong, i like taylor but he is a bit clumbsy,

Bassong was superb against spurs, i just watched the game again on TV in the US - he and enrique were really excellent.

I wouldn't say Enrique was "excellent." He was the one who failed to step forward on the deep ball to Modric. That said, for the most part he kept Lennon in check. Yes, he got beat occasionally, but Lennon is one of the fastest players in the league. I still think we need a Left Back who is more consistent, but Enrique has had a good 3-4 game spell. He's still the weakest of the back four, but he hasn't been a liability back there.

Stop waffling.. the first thingi thought when that went in was, who didnt step forward.. you are joking me?

I agree he was probably the least consistant and yes out of the back four the first I would replace but you cant blame the lad for a freak ball, played from a challenge on our striker falling to a deep attacking midfielder...where do you want the kid to stand? If you can honestly answer that question as the halfway line - fair enough - I don't think his positioning was bad for that goal.

would you like our back four on the halfway line? especially playing against, as you say, one of the quickest wingers in the league, I'd imagine you would probably waffle on about his position if he had pushed up and it was lennon who burned past all to slot away..

Now think about it, was it Joses fault, be truthful, go on, it wont hurt to admit your post was wrong? who's fault?
