With Michael Owen "flattered" by the club's offer of a new 4 year contract, speculation has been fuelled as to whether the striker will remain at Newcastle at the end of the season. For months the club has stalled on new contracts for current players, amid gossip of wage cuts and a clear-out. Now that contract talks have began and offers are on the table the media is at it again. However, Owen is said not to have rejected the new deal despite rumours to the contrary.

Owen's agent Tony Stephens said yesterday of the development;

"Michael has let it be known that he's flattered by Newcastle's desire to keep him at St James' Park. And it's no coincidence that he has re-discovered his best form recently and started scoring goals again.

Anyone who saw his face when he put Newcastle in front at Portsmouth will see how committed he is to lifting the club up the Premier League table.

Like the rest of the Newcastle team, he was buoyed not just by the result against Portsmouth, but the manner in which it was achieved. Michael's training for the Spurs game, and this is what he's focusing on.

He's letting his advisors look at the financial aspects, and even though he knows some of the figures which are being bandied about are wide of the mark, he's just concentrating on staying fit and doing what he does best, and that's scoring goals."

Another "source" allegedly close to Owen had the following to say;

"Michael has not rejected Newcastle United's offer. His advisors are working through it, and they'll respond accordingly.

However, as in the case of Frank Lampard at Chelsea, these things aren't done overnight."

I'd really like him to stay, his forms picking up and he's looking a lot fitter.

A four year contract will keep him until 33 on a very high salary, something i think only Man-city would match. I get the vibe Manchester City would rather spend more for better.

JFK on BBC sport has now said he is a lot more optimistic that he will sign after a hour long meeting with the player and says we should know the outcome in the next few days !!

If he hadnt had his injuries theer would be nowhere near the hype surrounding our 'mercinary', just cause he don't come out every 5 minutes saying he loves the club and that he will end his career here and all teh rest of it. Get off the kids back man... and for all them saying he is past it and that we are better without - make a walk into a corner and have a long hard think to yasel.. when your there think also about how many times he comes deep and instead of losing the ball will calm it pass it simply and move on, no need for drama a shot from nowhere or a pass to nothing- posession kept and we can start again.. sometimes I wonder if people are watching the same sport nevermind game that I am. Hope he signs sooner rather than later - he is crucial if we are looking to Intertoto/Uefa and he will bring people here that may shun us without - stability and growth is not about getting rid of the most prolific goalscorer at the club cause some people have a grudge at how much he earns or even how long he been injured- I can guarantee he didn't celebrate each week when he couldn't play.
