To the sky generation it's a no brainer, United's dominance, domestically, coincides with the sky premier era, whereas Liverpool's star has been slowly falling at the same time.  

 Liverpool have not won the league now since 1990 whereas United have moved from 8 to 19, overhaulingLiverpool's record by one. Do we measure greatness by trophies though?  If that was the case wouldn't Celtic have a claim asBritain's premier team? 

Do we measure by gate size; Old Trafford has grown to dwarf Anfield in the past decades, due to United's success in the lucrative Premier league.  Also they have commercially exploited their club across the globe fantastically well, whereasLiverpool's golden decades were bereft of commercial ideas.  So would you sayNewcastle are greater than say Juventus as their crowds are twice the size? 

The one area where United still lag behindLiverpool is they have failed to build a team, even after all these years of trying, that dominates the continent ofEurope.  I believe this is what drives Fergusson on; he desperately wants to matchLiverpool's 5 European cups, or produce back to back wins, or at least match the great Bob Paisley's triple of EC's, who is still the only manager ever to achieve that fete.

At the end of the day it's what's in people's heads who is the greater.  Next Sunday the fans will exchange the usual songs and chants about their old adversaries.  Difference is, after the game the Kop will stop.  Listen to every United game, you will hearLiverpool mentioned without fail.
