Pardew Defends Tiote Misunderstanding

Yesterday Newcastle United midfielder and current captain Cheik Tiote was handed a seven month sentence, suspended for 18 months, 180 hours of community service and a £600 fine for possessing a fake driving licence which he bought in Belgium for £12,800. He then sent it to the DVLA to swap it for a UK licence. 

Tiote pleaded guilty to the offence which meant he missed out on a holiday at Her Majesty’s Pleasure and today he is being defended by manager Alan Pardew.

Pardew has been quoted as saying he is relieved by the outcome and that he feels it was simply a communication breakdown which led the Ivory Coast International to break the law.

Pardew said;

“There are times when international players come abroad and don’t actually understand the rules.

We try to help them and try to push them in the right manner, the right way, and we’ll just make sure he gets the right advice going forward.

I’m relieved because he’s our captain and he’s playing the best football he’s played for about 12-14 months. He’s been terrific in the last three games and he will captain the team on Wednesday night.”

Tiote also had 6 points put on his current licence (we presume he was granted a real one), £3976 in prosecution costs and £100 victim surcharge.

You can swap a fake Belgian driving licence for a UK real one, wow. (Sm105)

You can drive on an International licence but it has to be swapped when you apply for a full UK one after 12 months I believe.
