Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Peterborough Utd v Newcastle Utd

By Tyne-Talk
April 2 2010

Newcastle travel to Peterborough United this weekend with promotion in their grasp, whilst Peterborough know that a defeat tomorrow and wins for Watford and Sheffield Wednesday would see them relegated to League One. Newcastle have won four in their last six games and drawn the other two, whilst Peterborough have lost their last 4 games and drawn the previous two from their last six. A massive 54 points divide the two teams in the table.

Peterborough will struggle with many players out injured. Defenders Ryan Bennett and Craig Morgan are both absent through ankle injuries, midfielder Chris Whelpdale picked up an ankle injury last weekend which could see him fail to regain fitness before the end of the season, whilst striker Aaron Mclean underwent surgery on his knee last week and will most certainly miss the rest of the season. Also out is defender Mark Little, who has a hamstring injury.

Manager Jim Gannon, who has rejected a long term contract offered by the club, may have a small piece of good news as striker Liam Dickinson returns from injury with a hope of being named in the squad.

Newcastle United's Andy Carroll who has stepped into the top 5 scorers in the Championship with 14 goals this season will be absent after limping off against Nottingham Forest last weekend due to an ankle injury, whilst Fitz Hall is unavailable due to a hamstring problem. Shola Ameobi marked his return last weekend with a goal and will be looking to take advantage of Carroll's absence which almost guarantees him a place in the starting eleven.

Manager Chris Hughton has said that he expects to name Alan Smith in the squad after he recovered from an ankle injury, whilst Steven Taylor (knee/broken jaw) remains Newcastle United's only long term absentee.

Fact: Newcastle have won their previous 3 league meetings against Peterborough.

Fact: Peterborough haven't scored in 5hrs and 5 minutes since Charlie Lee scored in their 2-1 defeat against Doncaster on March 16th.

Note: There is likely to be enhanced security at London Road for this match, both on the turnstiles and on the terrace due to Bristol City fans setting off fireworks on their visit at Peterborough's last home game.

Im hoping for a good win today. Wouldn't it be nice if Alan Smith came off the bench and scores the winner as we get the news that Forest are losing, to seal promotion.

Technically if Forest win out they can get to 86 points--which is where we sit. But yeah, WE ARE GOING UP!

Now to do so as CHAMPIONS!

Not certain yet Wasim(Sm100).

Good result and well dont to Hughton. Was able to rest some of our bigger players and still got the result. I know they are bottom of the pile but you can only beat whats in front of you.

Did Guthrie have a knock like.

got it. since sunlun cant go down, or get to europe, them winning does nothing positive for them. but spurs losing makes it harder to see them finish fourth. so i'm glad spurs lost

Great result! To be a top side you have to be able to win ugly.

I'm taking Monday off, ladies and gents. Gonna sing my lungs out at the supporters' club! I'm hoping the lads will serve up an early birthday gift for me! Haven't been this giddy in a while. Woot!!!

I hope so, they think that because they left the premiership and went cr@p that we were going to follow, and then had the cheek to say that they were a bigger club than us
