Match Preview/Thread/Stats: Newcastle v Middlesbrough

By Tyne-Talk
December 19 2009

Tomorrow lunchtime the BBC will screen the first Tyne-Tees derby of the Championship season and their first meeting outside of the top flight for 18 years, for a 1pm Kick Off. Newcastle United host Middlesbrough at St James' Park on the back of 5 wins and 1 draw from 6 games, whilst Middlesbrough travel on the back of 3 defeats, 2 draws and 1 win, creating 10 places between the two teams.

For Newcastle, Chris Hughton will be without striker Andy Carroll who will serve a 1 match ban for picking up 5 yellow cards so far this season, however Danny Guthrie who missed out last week is available for selection.

Joey Barton remains Hughton's only long standing injury concern and the team will be defending their impressive home record this season as the only club to still have an unbeaten home record in the Championship.

Middlesbrough are also without key players after Seb Hines picked up an injury in their midweek reserve game. Boro are also without Adam Johnson (hamstring) and Sean St.Ledger after his loan spell ended with the club.

Captain Gary O'Neill is set to return.

Fact: Newcastle United have lost just once in their last 14 games against Middlesbrough at St James' Park. That defeat being in 2001.

A few years ago, I watched this match live at St.James and it remains the only game I got to watch there so it will bring back some good memories. I'm hoping for three points and if it takes an own goal to win it then so be it. Howay the lads!

Thank god we are winning, not the best Harewood goal but they all count, bit of luck as Ameobi fouled in the build up.

We need to up the tempo as Boro look shaky in defence but saying that so do we, just got a massive bit of luck with Taylor keeping it out with his hand

We seem to be playing route one all the time and that worries me. Having said that we lead 1-0 at half time and haven't played near our best. Hope he makes a change or two on the hour mark and that we up the tempo a bit more.

No real movement of the forwards and other than Jonas and Enrique the team want to go route one, we should try and pass the ball around as we are a better team than Boro.

Great cross by Guthrie and its 2-0. Ameobi with a good finish but crosses like that deserve to be goals. Quality!

Damn Sunday mid-day games. I just woke up (10 am here). Good to see a 2-0. Can't wait for Wasim to post the cross.

All the reports make it sound like Guthrie was stellar with his deliveries on free kicks as well as the cross.

Just got in from graft. Wasnt the best game but that sort of goes out of the window in derby games.

Jose got motm and he was good but Colo was immense. I think Lita is still in his pocket. He was quick and cool as @#$%& on the ball. I cant think of him puting a foot wrong and deserves the credit. Lita and Kitson are not a bad pairing.

Great cross by Guthrie and Jonas put in a good shift. Nolan was prob our quietest player and I think we are missing a trick not playing him further up at home with a more attacking centre mid pushing on. Suppose we dont have one at the mo other than Guthrie.

I've added the goals. I'll be hoping to add full clips, for the 2nd goal, but for now, those who haven't seen the goals can see them on my blog.

By the way was it just me or did Mark Bright seem to absolutely hate us with his commentating yesterday he winged everytime we got a freekick etc. Damm commentators their supposed to be imparcial.
