Newcastle travel to Scunthorpe tonight in their 13th league game of the season. Newcastle who were knocked off the top spot on the weekend will be looking to resume their lead over West Brom, whilst Scunthorpe will be looking to edge closer to the top half of the table. 3 points for either side could have a big impact on both teams, depending on how other results in tonight's full fixture list go.

Newcastle go to Glanford Park without a win in their last 3 games, whilst Scunthorpe host on the back of a 3-1 win against Sheffield Utd at the weekend.

Chris Hughton will be buoyant going into the game after being offered the managerial position at the club, but will be disappointed by the news that defender Steven Taylor could be absent for up to 2 more weeks with a hamstring injury.

Hughton will also be without Fabricio Coloccini (groin) who is expected to return at the weekend and long term absentees, Shola Ameobi and Joey Barton who are both recovering from foot injuries.

Zurab Khizanishvili and Danny Simpson are likely to be given the nod and Hughton has indicated he is likely to stick with Marlon Harewood after a slow game for the loan striker at the weekend.

Scunthorpe United manager Nigel Adkins is without striker Ben May (ankle) who will be absent until December and Kenny Milne who has a long term knee injury.

Grant McCann and Josh Wright both return from injury but Michael O'Connor is serving a 1 match suspension after receiving 5 yellow cards this season.

Fact: Scunthorpe have won all three of their home matches against Newcastle United, however the clubs last met in the FA Cup in 1974 where Newcastle won 3-1.  Their last league game was in the season of 1963/64.

I was optimistic before the last 3 games and so disappointed after them. I hope Hughton gives 4-5-1 a chance tonight.

that is a positive change to the line up, and a welcome change in that hughton has been assertive following a defeat - dropping harewood was right, and so (i hope) is the new midfield. geremi and smith should barely cross the halfway line, allowing the fullbacks to go outside of guthrie and jonas to supply nolan and carrol.

i like this, hope the lads are fired up

it was just a thought. the link up between taylor and nolan was a huge factor in our last win.
its a shame none of the reserve centre halfs is pushing hard enough to start, as danny simpson is very much a fullback.

chance that colo will return for saturday, apparently

Goalless at half time. So that's one goal in the last 3 and a half matches. But its been a decent half though, and we've had 6 shots on target and 4 corners compared to 2 shots on target and 0 corners from Scunthorpe. Apparently Carroll and Nolan looking good up front which is encouraging.
