Match Preview/Thread/Stats: Newcastle v Tottenham

By Tyne-Talk
December 20 2008

Newcastle host Tottenham Hotspur this weekend as they search for a 2nd consecutive win after their 3-0 success against Portsmouth last weekend. After facing Harry Redknapp's former club last week Newcastle will set out to beat his new club where he has had a good start. Both clubs go into the game on the same number of points. Joe Kinnear is currently on a 5 match unbeaten run; whilst Redknapp has lost just 2 games in the 9 he has managed for Spurs. Both teams have injury concerns and are likely to have key players missing.

For Newcastle Obafemi Martin's is ruled out after picking up a groin injury after scoring against Portsmouth, Joey Barton (knee), Alan Smith (foot) and Gonzalez (Achilles) will all miss out.

Steven Taylor will be looking to start, as is Damian Duff both of whom are returning from injury but are likely to make the bench.

Michael Owen will cast aside contract talks and is likely to pair upfront with Shola Ameobi who will be looking for his 50th goal for the club.

For Tottenham, Darren Bent is suffering with tonsillitis and is a doubt whilst Modric is suffering with a hamstring injury and Aaron Lennon may feature after a groin injury.

Redknapp could be without injury prone Jonathon Woodgate (back), Ledley King (knee), former Newcastle player Jermaine Jenas (calf), Alan Hutton (foot) and Giovani Dos Santos (ankle) all of whom missed the mid week UEFA cup game.

Reckon 2-1 to us. Little Mikey to get on of them.
C'mon the Toon.

Three points will put us even with Wigan on points, which sets up a potentially big 6-pointer on Boxing Day.

I said last weekend, we needed to come out of December 28 matchup with Liverpool holding 24 points, but I honestly was banking on a draw last week. With the injuries to Spuds, playing at SJP, and Mikey's good form, there should be no excuse for anything less than a win today.

As far as the line-up. I love Taylor, but the back line has been too good in three of the last four matches for us to put Bassong or Colo on the bench. If Tay is going to get back in the first team, he better learn how to use his left foot and cross the ball. I'd come out the same as last week, with Duke over Martins (injury)

Given
Beye Bassong Colo Enrique
Jonas Butt Guthrie Zog
Owens Viduka

I'd like to think we can win this.

Both teams have a problem with consistency and you never really know what you're going to get.

Lets hope the good Newcastle show up to play the poor Tottenham.

what the heck was Shola Ameobi doing???!!!!

He's never heard of shielding the ball with his body?

I would have hauled him off as well. He lost the ball and just walked away like he didn't care. He did the same thing a few minutes before, he lost the ball and kept on strolling around rather than chase the guy who just dispossessed him. I just thought to myself, doesn't he care he's lost possession for the team?

Shola is not the only one to blame though, where in the hell did Colocinni think he was going? He went walkabout again far up the pitch! I know he used to be a defensive midfielder but he needs to remember that he is playing center back.

Enrique was at fault also he should have stayed in line with the rest of the defence.

yeah back four have looked pretty good other than that chance. Still think that 90% of the time that lino just throws up his flag to avoid getting bashed.

The Six-pointer at Wigan on Boxing Day is looking to be a good match. Hopefully Titus Bramble gets injured on the training pitch...

I thought Viduka was descent. He provides something the average striker can't which makes every Newcastle game more interesting when he's playing. Jose Enrique was near best on ground I thought along with Nicky Butt.

Jose Enrique did excellently to deal with little aron till the 80th min and then got skinned twice in as many mins but still he had him in his pocket for most of the game
