Top 20 Players : 11th - Peter Gain

Peter Gain was at the club for half of the decade and established himself as a fan favourite at Sincil Bank. One of the many who excelled under Alexander, Gain scored many memorable goals during the decade before leaving in 2005 for Peterborough United. If there's one position that City have had decent players in this decade, it is the left wing position. The first to occupy that was Peter Gain, a talented midfielder signed from Tottenham Hotspur. Although Gain's talents were obvious, it wasn't until the 2002/3 that it became apparent just how good he was. As one of the few players who retained their place at the club after the departure of Buckley, Gain formed an excellent partnership with Richard Butcher and various other midfielders throughout his time at Sincil Bank.

It seems strange that in a tactic system so blatantly directed to long-ball, that Peter Gain would be one of the stand out players. Not only creating several goals, Gain scored many beautiful goals, some long range efforts such as a 40 yard effort against Rushden, to jinking and maisy runs against Southend and the memorable goal against Hartlepool.

He continued in fine form throughout his time under Keith Alexander and his midfield partnership with Richard Butcher became one of the best midfield duos for many years, both capable of scoring wonderful goals and two midfielders who not only complimented each other, but were only half the player when they weren't together.

Then came arguably the biggest turning point of City's decade, the announcement of a near £750,000 profit, sometPererGainBarryFryhing that a lot of the squad weren't happy about because they had yet to be rewarded for their efforts, but Gain's departure was one of the most surprising. Not only did he join rivals Peterborough United, but whilst most players would appear on the pitch in the announcement of a new signing, Gain appeared on the bed of a half-naked Barry Fry, very disturbing.

Some fans didn't react well to this and Gain was allegedly attacked by City fans on a night out, and scoring twice past City during his time at Peterborough showed that he wasn't happy with that situation and he goaded City fans. Gain soon found himself to be part of an ex-City club at Peterborough. Within a year they also had Keith Alexander, Gary Simpson, Keith Oakes, Richard Butcher, Ben Futcher, Simon Yeo and Jude Stirling were all at London Road.

However, once Alexander left, the ex-Imps club soon started leaving and Gain found himself out of the squad altogether before signing for Dagenham several years ago. He is still at the LBBD Stadium.

Decent player but I will never forgive his lack of respect when he scored at London road in posh's 2-1 defeat, running the length of the City fans celebrating and then trying to goad us - Poor for a man, whose wages were paid by us for a long time.

Good player but let himself down in that Peterborough game, a shame as I had always rated him as one of the best midfield players I have seen at the Bank, always seemed to be able to make himself time and hardly ever rushed. Doing well at Dagenham but never played at a higher level, maybe its is attitude that lets him down?

Prefer to remember him for his skill on the pitch "same old Gainy, taking the p1ss" ..... what we'd give for a midfielder like him now? Oh and a decent bloke too, who always spoke and shared a beer when out on a Sat nite!

(I'll forgive the Posh incident, cos we won!)
