On a disastrous evening at Stainton Park, four goals in each half saw ten man Leigh Genesis suffer the type of defeat that could only be considered to be a potential destroyer of a Final Score videprinter.
Despite losing 2-1 to Bradford Park Avenue on Saturday, there were more than enough signs in the Leigh performance to suggest that all is not lost in their battle at the foot of the UniBond Premier League table, but they were behind as early as the third minute of this particular encounter. Genesis midfielder John Dillon, making his second ‘debut' for the club after playing elsewhere in the years that have followed his original departure from Leigh, mistimed a simple back pass to his goalkeeper Dean Porter, allowing Mike Lennon to race on to the ball and make no mistake in rounding Porter and slotting the ball in to the net.
Porter had to be at his best seventeen minutes later to deny Nantwich midfielder Robin Gibson a goal against his former club, but the visitors doubled their lead from the resultant corner when centre back Charlie O'Loughlin headed past Porter. O'Loughlin, however, could count himself somewhat fortunate to still be on the field at this point having previously inflicting an injury on Porter with a late, crude challenge from behind when the goalkeeper successfully attempted to guide the ball out for a goal kick; Porter appearing to still be showing discomfort as a result, even at the time of the second goal.
Just a minute later and Nantwich had grabbed their third of the evening, with referee Peter Bankes once again at the centre of proceedings, ruling that Nantwich forward Dave Walker had done no wrong in an aerial challenge with Porter that saw the goalkeeper spill the ball towards Dave McPherson, who looped the ball over the stranded youngster and in to the net.
The match descended almost in to farce with five minutes of the first half remaining when O'Loughlin and Genesis captain Alex Cunliffe tussled at a corner kick. Each player almost had the other in something close to a headlock as they jostled for space in the penalty area, with neither giving away an inch of space. O'Loughlin appeared to throw a punch in to the midriff of Cunliffe, who although understandable, inexcusably retaliated and received his marching orders as a result.
Lennon slotted away the penalty with the minimum of fuss for his second goal of the evening and Nantwich were four goals to the good by the break.
Fourteen minutes in to the second half and Nantwich had scored their fifth goal of the evening when Robin Gibson somewhat sheepishly chalked up a strike against his former club with a twenty five yard shot that swerved late and caught Porter wrong-footed in the Leigh goal.
Just three minutes later and Leigh had equalled their worst defeat of the season when experienced midfielder Andy Heald was unfortunate to see a corner kick rebound off his body and in to the net before Dave Walker scored his side's seventh goal of the evening with an eighty-fifth minute penalty after former Leigh left back Dave Tickle was scythed down by a desperate Rob Farrington challenge.
The rout was completed on eighty nine minutes when substitute Andy Kinsey headed Nantwich's eight goal of the evening.
It is at times like these that, as supporters, you might laugh or cry, and it will be heartening for all concerned with Leigh Genesis that a number of their fans continued their wholehearted support for their team until well after the final whistle, though they will no doubt be hoping for better when Guiseley visit Stainton Park on Saturday.

I feel sorry for Dean Porter, I would hate having 8 goals put past me in a football game.
Its just another game that we have to put it behind us and try to look forward to the next.
If you can get a take over of some kind, and get your other issues resolved theres no reason why Leigh Genesis can't have a good future!
But, we have struck a deal with Liverpool academy which is just what we need now! Our academy is doing pretty well for themselves, but as soon as they hit 18, I'm struggling to see who they're gonna play for. I can't see the first team being around for long.
I predict the club will turn into a local junior side, albeit the most professional junior team in Leigh, with games being held at the LSV

(But on the harriers track next to the stadium) Although some people think otherwise, I still think the club has a future. I'll admit that an 8 - 0 defeat isn't convincing but the club is in a dark-time.
I still believe that there is light at the otherside of the tunnel, no matter how long it is.
All we can do is hope, and keep supporting the team.
