Match Preview/Stats/Thread: Newcastle Utd v Bristol City

By Tyne-Talk
October 3 2009

Newcastle United host Bristol City in their 11th game of the season this afternoon, on the back of a draw against Queens Park Rangers in midweek and 3 wins out of 6 games. Bristol City travel on the back of 2 wins out of 6 games and in the knowledge that they have failed to win on Tyneside in 99 years.

Newcastle are still without Fabricio Coloccini who is struggling with a groin injury, Shola Ameobi who could be out for another 6-8 weeks with a foot injury and Joey Barton who could be out for months after undergoing exploratory surgery on his foot injury.

Ryan Taylor is pushing for a part in today's game after overcoming a calf strain, however Hughton could rest him to ensure his recovery is 100%.

Bristol City welcome back defender Jamie McCombe who returns from suspension and Liam Fontaine who has recovered from a knee injury.

City will be without Paul Hartley who has shingles and goalkeeper Dean Gerken who has failed to recover from a virus in time.

Fact: Newcastle have won their last 5 games against Bristol City in all competitions.

Fact: The last time these two sides met was almost exactly 14 years ago on 4th October 1995 when the score was 3-1 in Newcastle's favour.

Mixed feelings about the line-up. Not having Enrique will hurt us going forward as R. Taylor plays much better on the right, and I don't think that both Carroll and Ranger deserved to be dropped. However, the pace in the side is great with Jonas, Simpson, and Lovenkrands all in it.

I have to head to work right now, but I'm in my black and white striped dress shirt for the day. I expect good news when I return in 9 hours.

Anybody know what the formation is? I'm having trouble sorting it out...

Also, from the stats (60% NUFC possession), it looks like we just need a breakthrough.

C'mon, lads!!!

Preston and West Brom have given us the 0-0 that I wanted.

WE MUST capitalise today and bag 3 points, anything less will be a failure (Sm102)

Commentator made a good point: if we'd got the penalty who'd have taken it, considering Guthrie is the designated player.

I don't understand why this team can't ever seem to take advantage of these situations. Couldn't do it in the Prem, still can't do it a league lower. This should have been a sure (or as close to it) 3 points.

The lack of cutting edge in this squad is more than apparent. A bona fide finisher needs to be bought.

CND, I think it's becoming pretty clear that the problem with this squad is the lack of a finisher and a creative midfielder. We dominated possession in this game, but didn't make many chances-and nobody put anything away.

Ref was bad and cost us a penalty, but on the day we shouldn't have needed it.

This is nearly a very complete, well-rounded squad. We need a creative central midfielder and a forward who can finish.

It seems to me that we play better with three out and out forwards on the pitch. We're not getting much out of the wings. But Hughton never starts a game in a 3-striker formation. Maybe he should reconsider that.

I think we'd get more out of Jonas in that formation, too. I'm not the first to say he might be better playing more in a more central position.

Good shoot Tunyc about Jonas going in the central midfield, we lack somebody who can run at defenders in the middle of the park.

I would play 5 midfielder and go with:

Guthrie or R.Taylor, Nolan , Smith, Jonas, Lovernkrands

Honestly, I don't know why we reverted to a 4-4-2. Our depth is in the midfield not up top. 4-5-1 is more conducive to the team.
