Match Preview/Thread: Tottenham v Newcastle

By Tyne-Talk
March 29 2008

Newcastle United FC travel to White Hart Lane tomorrow where Tottenham Hotspur plays host to a side that won their first Premier League game of 2008 last weekend against Fulham. Newcastle's main problem this weekend is Middlesbrough. Should Middlesbrough lose or draw against Chelsea and Newcastle steal 3 points in London, they could potentially be sat side by side Spurs in the league.

History is on Newcastle's side this weekend, though performance and confidence may not be. Newcastle won all 4 of their last meetings with Spurs, grabbing a 3-2 win last time they visited WHL.

Newcastle have won just 1 in their last 14 games, whilst Spurs have won 3 in their last 6. Both teams have drawn just once in their last 6 whilst Newcastle have lost 4 to Spurs' 2 defeats.

In addition to that Spurs have won 9 in 20 under the management of Juande Ramos and haven't lost at home at all in their last 8 games. Newcastle however have only picked up 1 point from 21 potential points in their last 7 away games.

Tottenham go into the match with Jonathan Woodgate struggling from a slight groin injury picked up midweek with England but is likely to play, and Ledley King is also set to feature after returning to the reserves earlier in the week.

Ricardo Rocha may also return despite struggling with a groin problem. Ramos is still without Gareth bale who has an ankle injury and Benoit Assou-Ekotto who has a knee injury.

For Newcastle Kevin Keegan is without Claudio Cacapa who could be out for the season with a groin injury and James Milner who has an ankle problem.

Long term sufferers Shay Given who recently had surgery on his groin and Emre who is still struggling with a calf injury remain sidelined.

Stephen Carr may return to the fold against his old club, if Keegan deems him fit after recovering from a hamstring injury.

For Newcastle, fielding the side which beat Fulham last weekend seems the sensible option, but with Spurs enjoying scoring 4 goals a game, Keegan may need to consider how strong his defence is in advance of the match.

Spurs may be watching out for Owen after a warning from manager Ramos, but Martins is adamant it is his turn to score.

He said:

"It has worked very well in the last couple of games.

These tactics suit me and any player who wants to attack.

Mark and Michael have scored in recent games, so it will probably be my turn against Tottenham!"

A very well deserved win! 4 Great goals. As good as newcastle have been spurs have been awful like. Its embarresing, they did the same against birmingham. never known what to expect from them. Newcastle have dominated though and deserve it (Sm95)

Very proud of the lads today, outplayed them everywhere and they were at home (Sm6).
Their wall for the freekick today was laughable.
Good to see Martins and Owen scoring again, Butt always seems to have a habit of scoring against Spuds for some ironic reason.
Up to 12th now, challenge for Europe smiling smiley
