Taylor: "I wont be mucked about"
By Tyne-Talk March 3 2008
Newcastle United defender Steven Taylor has today been told by Kevin Keegan that contract negotiatons are in the pipeline but he will have to wait. Taylor has openly discussed his dismay at having been made to wait for a new contract as the club struggle in the Premier League. The under 21 England captain has just 18months left on his current deal after he rejected a 5 year contract in the summer.

Taylor blames chairman Chris Mort for the lack of activity, after he inherited the contract issues from former chairman Freddy Shepherd.

Taylor said:

"I have heard nothing at all about a new contract.

It is up to the chairman to offer me one, but the longer it goes without any feedback the more concerned I'm becoming.

I've lived all my life on Tyneside, come up through the youth system and have a great relationship with the Newcastle fans. There is no other club I want to play for.

Kevin Keegan has been fantastic to me since he came in. I love playing for him, but I know he has had a lot of other things on his mind since he came back. I understand that.

But I don't think this is down to him. It has to be sorted out by the people upstairs. There has been a lack of contact. My dad has been mucked about. Meetings have been cancelled.

I have been mucked about in the past and have kept my mouth shut. For things to have dragged on this long is a joke.

I get on great with Kevin, but I think it is the people upstairs who don't rate me. I won't be mucked about. I just want this sorted out.

The longer I hear nothing from the club the more I fear they want to sell me.

If there is no offer on the table by the summer then I will have no choice but to look at my options."

Shepherd had originally told Taylor that once he was a regular in the 1st team the terms of the contract would be improved. As it was the offer on the table would have left Taylor as one of Newcastle United's lowest paid players.

Steven Taylor is challenged by Aston Villas Marlon Harewood

Taylor has now made 112 appearances for Newcastle and scored 5 goals. Manager Kevin Keegan has publically declared that he is interested in resuming negotiations with Taylor as he has a lot of respect for the player and feels he can go a long way, but he isnt prepared to let talks interfere with the current Premier League campaign, and that means Steven could be waiting until the summer before anything is discussed.

Keegan said:

"I think they're things that are important to the player and the club, but I don't think at the moment they're the thing that we should be most concerned about.

We want to make sure we stay in this division, which we've still got to. Then, we'll look at all those things.

There are other players as well as Steven whose contracts need looking at.

He's still got another year after this, so we've got time to talk. I think I'm going to see his dad this week."

Should Taylor be forced to exit SJP it would be a great loss to the club he has dedicated himself to. Taylor has been one of the clubs most motivated players this season and has repeatedly put all his effort into his game. There would be no shortage of clubs interested in him. Last summer when it was rumoured he was set to leave he was linked with several Premier League clubs, including Liverpool and Spurs.

Taylor has great potential but I think he's let his head get a little big. He's become complacent and some of his defending of late has been shocking!

He could do with deflating his ego a little and he needs to stop being so erratic...and get some composure!

Re: Taylor: "I wont be mucked about"
this isnt the first time taylor has used the media to try and create pressure on the club to improve his contract. almost certainly his agents doing, but this time around it is shocking timing. i hope he's been given a quiet word to this effect by his manager. at this point in time we are drawing fire from all quarters in the press, and this kind of thing just gives them more ammunition.
the squad needs to be focussed on getting some points on the board, and leave other things for later

I wonder how much he is asking for and how much was offered. There's no doubt he's a good player, but some of our lads will be on silly money.

Re: Taylor: "I wont be mucked about"
Hopefully that situation is all taking care of come summer time. I think all the boys should be playing their hearts out so they can still be here at this time next year cause I can definitely see Keegan sending many on their bikes. Especially those who show they don't want to be here, and I'm all for it. I don't care who it is and how "good" they are, send em out. I see Taylor here for many years, he isn't going anywhere as for players like Zog..... if he doesn't want to be here then send him off.

WTF? There is no player more important to this squad than Taylor. I guess Mort's too busy working out a pay raise for Owen, huh?

I'll believe this when he stops wearing the Smith shirt to every game.

He wears a "King Kev" one now. Although if he keeps Smit I'll hate KK and Ashley

I wouldnt be upset to lose him. Loyalty means a lot, but ability means more.

you're entitled to your opinion Rodders.

He has more ability than any of our defenders if you ask me, and he's the youngest.

Re: Taylor: "I wont be mucked about"
Taylor is a very big-hearted, enthusiastic player and I hope he stays and fulfills his potential. But he's not great with the ball at his feet and doesn't win as many headers as I would expect. Faye on the other hand wins almost everything in the air and is competent on the ground. Cacapa has an excellent touch but has probably slowed down a little. Somebody needs to command our own penalty area. But I think Faye is the best right now. That's just my own opinion. Unfortunately, I live too far away from Newcastle to see many games but I was at the Blackburn match. This is my first post so don't be too hard on me!

Taylor has been a good player for us...and commitment wise in recent seasons he has helped out a good deal.

I don't think he has turned into the champion defender I was hoping yet like..
He needs to get his head down (again) and help out the greater cause.

I agree completely with jimmy-jay. Either way, it's the worst possible time to be worrying about renewing contracts for next season before we are completely sure in which division we will even be.

Bad timing, absolutely.

And Faye probably is our best defender right now. But remember, Faye is 30 years old and Taylor only 22.

Re: Taylor: "I wont be mucked about"
Northern Scotland. I've supported Newcastle since I was 4. I hope to go to the Sunderland match. I'd like to go more often and I would on a car share basis but don't know any people nearby who go. So I go by train and spend almost the whole day travelling there and back (with a 'short' football match sandwiched imbetween). I usually have to work the rest of the weekend so staying in a hotel overnight isn't really an option very often. But I'm sure other supporters make much more sacrifice to attend away matches, especially, than I do ...

Bet you still been more than me. Same age I was a Toon fan 's well. My family don't like Toon (a.k.a football, they prefer kicking and hoofing, a la Blackburn). 3 games in this life time. 2 in Tonn end and 2 at Ewood Park.

Shameful!

You have probably gone to more games then I ever will and believe me it kills me to say that. But I am trying to become rich quick (like everyone right) and retire and live up in Newcastle.... just a personal dream. Would love to see the Toon every week!

Aye I have a better idea. I'm going to Uni to do a groundsman course and work as a groundsman at the Toon.

See you all in about 5years!
