Muamba Profile

Fabrice Muamba

Born: 6th April 1988, Khinshasa, DR Congo

International Honours: England U21

Position: Central Midfielder

Squad Number: 6

Former Clubs: Arsenal, Birmingham City, Bolton Wanderers

Bolton manager Gary Megson beat off competition from local rivals Wigan Athletic to land midfielder Fabrice Muamba from relegated Birmingham City in June 2008.

Muamba, despite only being in his early twenties, has over two years of first team football behind him and Bolton had no hesitation in forking out over £5 million for his services.

A hugely competitive, box to box player, Muamba arrived in England to escape war torn Congo in 1999 and set up home in the East End of London with the rest of his family.

He was granted English nationality and his promise as a budding footballer was spotted by scouts from leading Premier League club Arsenal who signed him up to their Academy scheme in 2002.

Three years later he signed a professional contract with the Gunners, making his debut for them in a League Cup tie against Sunderland at the Stadium of Light and following this up with ninety minutes against Reading at Highbury in the same competition.

He spent the whole of the 2006-2007 season on loan at Championship side Birmingham City and his willingness to chase down lost causes made him a huge favourite with the Blues crowd culminating in them naming him their Young Player of the Year.

In the summer of 2007 after securing promotion back to the top flight, the Blues made Muamba's stay at St Andrews a permanent one and paid Arsenal a fee in the region of £4 million for the rising young talent.

Again last season, he proved to be a mainstay of the side making well over 30 appearances and celebrated the first two goals of his career against Portsmouth and Blackburn Rovers.

He was unable to help Birmingham keep in the Premiership and soonafter made the switch to the Reebok where it is hoped he can fill the void left by the long serving Ivan Campo.
