Gary Megson's first signing as the manager of Bolton Wanderers turned out to be Israeli international Tamir Cohen in January 2008 after the midfielder had impressed on trial the month previous.

Bolton paid a small fee to Maccabi Netanya beleived to be in the region of £37,500 for the player who is the son of the one time Liverpool and Glasgow Rangers star Avi Cohen.

Beginning his career with Maccabi Tel-Aviv alongside former Wanderer Tal Ben-Haim in 2001, he made his debut for them a just over a year later when appearing against city rivals Bnei Yehuda in a narrow 1-0 victory.

By this time he had already won honours with Israel at youth level and soonafter stepped up to the U21 team where his displays in a defensive midfield role saw him tipped as a future star.

At Maccabi Tel-Aviv he was part of the team which lifted the Israeli Cup in 2005 and two years later after losing his place in their side he was on his way to Maccabi Netanya.

His career was reborn at Netanya and he went on to force his way into the full international reckoning alongside Premier League stars such as Liverpool's Yossi Benayoun and the aforementioned Ben-Haim, with his first cap coming in a match against Croatia in October 2007.

A move to Bolton sees him follow in the footsteps of countrymen Ben-Haim and Idan Tal, the latter of whom left Bolton for Beitar Jerusalem six months prior to Cohen's move to the Reebok Stadium.
