Bolton Wanderers Danny Guthrie in action

Danny Guthrie

Born: Shrewsbury, 18th April 1987

International Honours: England U20

Position: Midfielder

Squad Number: 17

Former Clubs: Liverpool, Southampton (loan), Bolton Wanderers (loan)

Bolton manager Sammy Lee used his Liverpool contacts to good effect when bringing England youth international Danny Guthrie to the Reebok Stadium on a year long loan in June 2007.

Shrewsbury-born Guthrie is very highly rated at Liverpool and many consider him to be in a similar mould to that of current Reds captain Steven Gerrard in terms of the fact that he get around the pitch well and has a good range of passing.

As a youngster he was on the books of Manchester United but left Old Trafford at the age of 15. This ultimately proved to be Liverpool's gain as they immediately took him to Melwood and installed him in their reserve team.

By 2005 he was the reserve team captain at Liverpool and many felt that it was only a matter of time before he was to be given his professional debut and this came in a Carling Cup win over Reading at Anfield in October 2006.

He made his first Premiership appearance for the Reds against Portsmouth and even started the crucial Champions League game away at Turkish giants Galatasary last winter.

The Spring of 2007 saw him remain on the fringes of the first team squad before Southampton manager George Burley took him to the St Mary's Stadium on an emergency loan in March.

He stayed on the South Coast until the end of the 2006-07 season and made ten appearances for the Saints as they just missed out on success in the Divisional Play Offs.
