Centre half Ellis arrived at the Reebok Stadium on trial from Exeter City in the summer of 2005 and impressed the coaching staff sufficiently enough to be offered an Academy scholarship with the club.
His first task in Wanderers colours was to mark senior player Kevin Davies in a practise game and he passed the test with flying colours meaning Wanderers had to pay a fee rising up to £600,000 to the Grecians.
A regular in the reserves throughout the 2005-2006 and 2006-2007 seasons, Ellis was offered a one year professional contract to stay with Bolton in the summer of 2007.
In September 2007 he moved back nearer to his birthplace when signing for Blue Square Premier League side Torquay United on a months loan and this was extended until the end of the season at Christmas.
