By John Christie June 11 2009 The kop used to regularly proclaim these two giants of Scottish football, depending on what side of the relgious divide you belonged to. Nothing serious, just a bit of pre match banter between Kopites.
The ties between Liverpool and Glasgow have stood for generations. Great sea ports on the western approaches. Cities built feeding the industrial revolution .Cities swamped by an Irish invasion escaping the potato famine. The Irish brought their religion, and alongside the resident working class grew religious divides. Liverpool shed its bigoted skin generations ago, but Glasgow still bristles with ignorance.
So now these two juggernauts are trapped in the SPL, as yet again we hear their cries to come amongst us in the Premier. You can understand their frustration when a young Spanish manager of Swansea chooses Wigan before Britain's first European cup winners.
So the question is do we want them or not? Their argument is they will fill every ground. Thing is though, they're full already. They will bring their passion and colour, of that there is no doubt. I for one would rather go to Glasgow than the likes of Wigan and Bolton.
What would happen to the Scottish league if they left? It might be more competitive, or it might fold. Would it give UEFA their chance to force a G.B.team?
With their massive fan base allied to sky money we would have a top six in no time. So why would the majority of teams want them to take their place and their opportunities?
I, for one, would welcome them both; I believe the religious and political nonsense will stop when they are diluted into a British Premier League.
I also think it's out of our hands, only if the TV revenues fall will they be invited by sky just to boost their own coffers.
Could the collapse of Sultana and their monies to the SPL disappearing be the catalyst for the old firm to enter the English game? Cant see how they would be fitted in though unless the Premier League is expanded.
I'm a United fan, but i always keep an eye out for the Celtic result
But when i went to Roy Keanes Testimonial, the Celtic fans showed their true colours..... as complete ar$eholes.
Leave them up their.
If they do come down, then they should be made start in the non leagues and earn their right to be in the premiership.

Couldn't agree more. Like you I used to have a soft spot for Celtic but couldn't care less anymore. When they played Forest in the UEFA Cup in the 80s, they showed their true colours too. And I read somewhere today that Rangers fans top the league for football related arrests at railway stations.

carra Irish when you say their"true colours" are you refering to politics and religon?
Not so much religion carra. They were very anti-English and were shall we say "up for it!" That was a long time ago mind, and I know that Celtic fans have won plaudits from UEFA for the exemplary behaviour of their fans at the UEFA Cup Final a few years back. Having said that, you don't have to scratch too far under the surface....
