With relegation to Conference North confirmed some weeks ago, RMI had little more than pride to play for at Broadhall Way, but hosts Stevenage certainly had a lot more at stake, with the prospect of a play-off place within their grasp enough to attract a bumper crowd of over 3,500 to the game, something that RMI can currently only dream of, and ultimately one of the main reasons for their financial trouble and subsequent relegation.
RMI boss Steve Bleasdale spoke earlier in the week of his desire to de-rail Stevenage's play-off prospects, but that was never really on the cards as Borough settled their early nerves and gave themselves a massive chance of clinching a play-off spot when they took the lead after just six minutes when Anthony Elding fired an absolute screamer from distance past Jon Worsnop in the RMI goal, much to the delight of the large home support.
Dino Maamria came close to scoring against his former club before Darryn Stamp sealed not only the victory, but also a play-off place and the chance of promotion to the Football League for 'Boro, when he scored in stoppage time after earlier hitting the woodwork, as RMI's season and Conference existence disappointingly fizzled out.
