Leigh RMI 1 Scarborough 1

By Matt Lawton
December 7 2004
The tables were turned in RMI's favour this evening when, in direct contrast to their recent form, they scored a late, late goal to grab a deserved point against high-flying Scarborough.
The visitors arrived at Hilton Park confident of victory against a side rooted to the bottom of the Conference with a run of ten straight defeats behind them, while Scarborough were looking to cement a place in the play-off positions with victory. However, such is the unpredictability of the Conference it was actually Leigh who felt aggrieved at only getting a point, although they did leave it until the very end to equalise.

It was RMI who started the brighter, forcing a succession of corners with Scarborough 'keeper Leigh Walker flapping all over the place, and the visitors indebted to their centre back after he cleared off the line from Gareth Stoker's header.

Despite this early pressure, it was the visitors who took the lead early on, with Seadogs striker Robert Gill capitalising on an open goal after Colin Cryan's free kick was rebounded straight in to his path by RMI goalkeeper Ian Martin.

Such a set back under previous managers Phil Starbuck and Mark Patterson might've seen RMI crumble, but new manager Geoff Lutley has installed a new sense of steel, heart and pride in to his side, and they showed plenty of determination to hassle the Scarborough players for the ball and create opportunities to get back on level terms, an aspect that will be particularly encouraging for Lutley and the RMI faithful as they look to haul themselves away from the foot of the table.

Although 'Boro goalkeeper Walker was again troubled by Stoker and Warren Peyton, it was the visitors who had a golden opportunity to wrap up the points when substitute Mark Hotte headed wide, before Walker fumbled Andy Roscoe's cross to allow Williams to force the ball over the line with the help of a Scarborough defender literally seconds from the final whistle to give RMI a well deserved point, their first in the Conference since grabbing a point at York City, ironically the local rivals of 'Boro.
