RMI made the long trip to Devon full of confidence with their new manager at the helm following Tuesday night's 5-1 victory over Marine in the Lancashire FA Marsden Trophy, and Lutley's RMI managerial career very nearly began with a bang when his side almost took a shock early lead through Karl Rose, only for the ex-Scarborough striker's shot to hit the crossbar, before Steve Flack's header gave the hosts the lead within twenty minutes of the start.
However, an RMI defence that welcomed back Australian goalkeeper Ian Martin, who returned to the club this week despite only recently being released by previous manager Phil Starbuck, held firm for the first rest of the first half and stayed well within a shout at half time at only one goal down.
That resilience didn't last long in the second half though, with the Grecians doubling their lead within ten minutes of the restart through Steve Devine's close range header, before Chris Simm scored his third goal of the week to halve the deficit to 2-1 with barely fifteen minutes remaining to give the visitors hope of an unlikely point.
That hope didn't last though, when with ten minutes remaining Gary Sawyer increased Exeter's two goal advantage, before Andrew Taylor and Jake Edwards both scored late goals to complete the rout and pile on the misery for rock bottom RMI, giving the scoreline a rather lop-sided look.
