Burton Albion 0-0 Leigh RMI

Burton Albion
By Jordan Reay August 17 2004
Leigh RMI and Burton Albion fought out a goal-less draw at Eton Park this evening. It was a creditable results for the Railwaymen who played most of the match with only 10 men.

RMI got their first point of the season in what was an up-hill struggle from start. After only 5 minutes Gareth Stoker was sent off for a professional foul on Burton's Aaron Webster. Moments later Albion had their first real chance of the game, an 18-yard header from Dale Anderson, which was easily saved by RMI 'keeper Ian Martin.

Webster had Burton's next good chance when his left-footed drive went just wide from 18-yards. Leigh continued to deal with anything Burton threw at them, but looked unimpressive going forward, creating hardly any attacking chances. The best Leigh could muster was a Warren Peyton long-ranged effort that sailed wide.

Burton could of took the lead after 35 minutes when Darren Stride latched on to Andrew Ducros' cross, only to mis-hit his shot right into Martin's arms. Albion's Terry Henshaw had the last action of the first-half when he saw his long ranged effort go wide in what was a typical effort in a lack-luster half from both sides.

The second-half started some-what as the first ended, with Leigh on the defensive and Burton having no luck in breaking the deadlock. Both Anderson and Laurie Wilson had long-range efforts that didn't test Martin in the RMI goal.

New boy Greg Rioch as well as Karl Rose and Chris Lane were all impressive throughout the second-half, all making clinical defensive blocks and tackles at the right times, keeping Leigh in the game. Rose had an effort on goal after 65 minutes which went wide from the edge of the penalty, in what was RMI's best chance of the half.

Anderson had a chance to win the game for Albion with 5 minutes to go, when he spooned his shot from only 6-yards and Martin made a comfortable save. Barry Miller as well as Rioch, Rose and Lane all continued to defend excellently as Leigh were able to hold out to earn a well deserved point.
